Jukola 2024: All You Need To Know

jukola2024

The 2024 edition of Jukola – the largest orienteering relay in the world  – is organized the coming weekend with more than 3000 teams on the start in total!

Start of the Jukola relay is Saturday at 22:00 CET (23:00 local time). 9 hours earlier at 13:00 CET the women start their relay. Here you find all the information you need about the Jukola and Venla relays. This is the 75th edition of the Jukola relay and the 46th edition of the Venla relay.

Jukola 2024 is organized in Lakia, north of Tampere – and there will again be a high quality international webTV-broadcast available from both the Jukola and Venla relays (Euro 25.-).   Live stream footage is offered in English and Swedish, including high quality GPS service. You can also view realtime results and watch interviews with top athletes.

Map and Terrain

The competition area is located north of the centre of Kauhava in the Mäenpää-Ahvenvuori area. There has been earlier some regional championships and Lakeuden Viesti 2018 in the competition area.

The terrain of the Venla and Jukola relays is a typical South Ostrobothnian open rocky terrain broken up by fields. The height differences in the terrain range from 0 to 30 metres and the rocky areas are small detailed and demanding to orienteer. The open rocky terrain is mainly easy to run in. There are some small swampy areas between the cliffs, but the swamps are not dominant. The accessibility of the swamps varies according to the amount of undergrowth and the softness of the swamps. The area also contains a large old sandpit, which has developed into a varied orienteering landscape with numerous small ponds and knolls. The area is forested and is a demanding orienteering area due to its rich network of trails. Runnability in the terrain is mainly good/ excellent, which gives high speeds per kilometre.

Somebody has put together the old maps of the area and uploaded the resulting map to 3DRerun here:

Here is an example of a leg set on the old maps – what would you choose here in daytime – and what would you choose at night?

  1. Helsinki Planners 1 6th leg Brother Fabric :D

    And Tampere Quest.

I don’t know where these translations come from, but they are hilarious.

  2. Well, that was quite a show put up by Stora Tuna in this years Jukola. At the top right from the start and then the lesser known Svensk brothers, that are not even in the national team, totally killing it against world famous runners and deciding the race already on leg 2 and 3 of the competition. Stora Tuna is on a whole different level right now!
