22:00 CET (23:00 local time) on Saturday Jukola starts – the largest orienteering relay event in the world. 9 hours earlier at 13:00 CET the women start their relay – the Venla relay. Here you find all the information you need about the Jukola and Venla relays. This is the 68th edition of the Jukola relay and the 39th edition of the Venla relay.
Jukola 2016 is organized close to Lappeenranta. As last year, there will be a high quality international webTV-broadcast available from the Jukola and Venla relay through the IOF Livecenter at a cost of 15 EUR – surely the best way to follow the competition. Commentator this year is Mikko Reitti, an experienced speaker from many events. Joining him are many top athletes – both orienteers and others – including Minna Kauppi, Lena Eliasson, Katja Mjøsund, Annika Björk and Kaisa Mäkäräinen (from Biathlon).
New this year is an arena run-through for around half of the legs (which legs will be made public just as each leg has started). The arena run-through is a first time ever for Jukola/Venla – the organizers find it to be a big advantage, let’s see how the runners react to it.
Live TV/results/tracking/startlists
- Live TV feed: Via IOF LiveCenter with English commentary for EUR 15. You can buy a LiveCenter Pass from shop.orienteering.org. To see the broadcast, enter your LiveCenter Pass code at: livecenter.orienteering.org. You can watch last year’s broadcast for free here.
- Live results – see also the Jukola Live page.
- There is GPS Tracking on all legs. Live GPS Tracking will only be shown on the TV feed – there is no separate tracking offered. Note however that this year you get a separate channel with GPS-tracking on the last leg of Jukola through the IOF Live Center. On some legs there will be little tracking shown so that later runners will not see the forking, as usually.
- Startlists for Jukola and Venla. Running order will be public for all teams Friday at 6 pm (local time) via the Jukola webpage

Two different old maps of the Jukola area are available through omaps.worldofo.com. One map based on LIDAR data made by Terje Mathisen (top of page) – and one version consisting of old maps of the area merged together. There is also a RunningWild available on the old map where you can test drive the old map under a bit of pressure on a course.
The competition area consists mainly of coniferous forestry with variable orienteering terrain typical of southeastern Finland. Runnability on hills and boreal forest areas is quite good, on marsh areas lying between the hills a bit slower. In some parts of the area there are plenty of logging areas and different-aged planted forest that slow down the running. On rapakivi-granite areas there are special knolls which may look like rocks. The relief is moderate with the biggest single height differences of 25-30 metres.

Jukola videos
Take a look at some old Jukola videos to get you in the Jukola mood. You can watch last year’s broadcast for free here.
I am guessing the legs with “public controls” will not actually pass through the arena, they will instead pass through a control located on the edge of the small hillside east of the arena.
Particularly on the night legs this would provide quite a spectacle!
The main problem is how to bring the courses back south around the warm-up area and into the last controls without passing directly through the path to the start triangle: It is possible that they will solve this with a bridge over the main road into the arena, so that runners can pass to the north of the event center, but this seems like it could be problematical with tens of thousands of runners and spectators.
Here we go again …
IOF Livecenter:
“This Event is not available in your location.
The owner of this event has chosen to block your location. If you think there has been an issue, please contact the event owner.”
Yes, I have paid and I got a key!
No good. I tried to forward your message to someone who can look at it. Any more info to add?
I am in Norway.
Tried different PCs and browsers. Same issue.
I am in the US. Same exact problem. Can anyone actually watch the coverage already?
Same problem here with me in DK. Anyone who knows more how to solve it?
Thanks for comments. I am trying to reach out to some more people..
Same issue here and I’m i Sweden “The Event is not avalible in your location” Frist information was start in 13:15 so I hope that’s the case…
Also in Austria same Problem
Same issue here in Finland
At the IOF page (to the right) you can read that the release will start in 1 hour. Timeshift problems?
I called some more people now, so I am sure the right people are onto it know. Please let me know if it work/doesn’t work, and I will forward it…
Still does not work here – same issue.
Maybe the organizers can provide a direct (free) link?
Still not working here. It says it is live, but when I enter it says web-TV not available.
Mine says “Live now”
Same here, notavailable.
Jan – a suggestion:
Possible for YLE to remove the GEO blocking in YLE Areena?
Try this:
http://livestream.com/accounts/8712572/events/5571657
Thanks, it works!
Not working in Portugal either. I paid and already missed the start
Why do the organizations always use the women races as a test period of the technical systems?
I have paid and no email has arrived. I am watching the link Dilbert provided but I want to see something for my money! Very frustrating. I am in the UK.
Check spam filter, It has been there for me sometimes
Thanks Erik. but it’s not there either.
This has happened to me as well during EOC. No e-mail nowhere but charged….
Some had luck with this link,
http://livestream.com/accounts/8712572/events/5571657
But it seems to be georestricted in Finland. Anyone else got this to work?
Works fine in Norway :)
Thank you for your help!
The Link works in sweden, thanks
It works also in the Czech republic.
Got code. Now just like everyone else, not available in my area (UK) ha!
Iof link works now
In CZE works only that link from Jan Kocbach, on the iof live center you can follow just the GPS tracking and then it writes “race has not started…”
Jana: Can you try to reload IOF live center and check again? I just talked to the organizers here who said they got message from the provider Traxmeet that everything should be OK now…
It says still the same. Maybe somebody else should it try it http://livecenter.orienteering.org/tracker/play.php?rxid=2016venla&token=7491-C52A-247C-4B10
Jana, same here in Austria. Just the gps is possible to choose, but not working at all either :-/
“race has not started” is the only thing I can “watch”
Very poor English commentary concerning the language itself, but also concerning the information given to the audience.
btw: Klaus Schgaguler is 1. Italian and 2. rather well known and experienced WOC/EOC/WC runner… excellent preperation of the so called speaker :-(
Why don’t they get someone who is actually an English speaker to do the commentary? Sounds so un-professional.
Live not working – just says web tv not available. Paid and not able to see anything!
Same by me, I’m really disappointed with whole streaming…. I thought that at least mens relay will be OK….
Anybody got live web TV working? Just says please wait for the broadcast to begin?
It didn’t work earlier but the IOF live streaming is working for us now
Try this link http://livestream.com/accounts/8712572/events/5609933
Thanks – working now;-)
Having trouble with the stream again early on the second leg of Jukola. Anyone else having problems?
Yes I also do.
Problems. Buffering all the time.
Now: “Video could not load or timed out. Try again to play”
Will not play.
Same in Ukraine too
It’s the same everywhere. Looks like the servers are down.
Money back?
getting sick of all this annoying stuff… wonder how many times we got a proper working pay-service and how many times NOT…
But the race will be away….
sa,e here. No money, no funny.
If anyone has a tip to get the video working, please post it here. (No help anywhere else). Must say this is irritating, to say it mildly….
Someone at orienterare.nu has suggested to download a test version of F-Secure Freedom https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/freedome and choose Finland as your location. Then you should be able to watch YLE (finnish TV) who are broadcasting jukola, also from other countries (only in finnish/swedish). Have not tried it myself (yet).
This works well, thanks a lot!
Thanks, works for me, too!
Test this
http://livestream.com/accounts/8712572/events/5609933
This works.
Not anymone.
Dead again… :(
It it gos down again, you gan use a VPN and then go and stream from YLE http://areena.yle.fi/tv/suorat/yle-tv1#autoplay=true
working
