Jukola 2017: All You Need To Know

Harpatti_vanha_kartta

Jukola – the largest orienteering relay in the world – starts Saturday at 22:00 CET (23:00 local time). 9 hours earlier at 13:00 CET the women start their relay – the Venla relay. Here you find all the information you need about the  Jukola and Venla relays. This is the 69th edition of the Jukola relay and the 40th edition of the Venla relay.

Jukola 2017 is organized close to Joensuu – and there will again be high quality international webTV-broadcast available from both the Jukola and Venla relays (Euro 16.-).  A lot of live GPS tracking and interesting interviews are promised. This international broadcast also has its own director, with 20 cameras in use.

A look in the back-mirror: Kovee won Jukola 2016 after an exciting relay where Kovee’s Daniel Hubmann was strongest in the end. In the Venla relay Halden’s Mari Fasting decided the relay after a tight battle with Tampereen Pyrintö.

Two different old maps of the Jukola area are available. The northern part of the area is covered by an old map from 2007. All of the area is covered by a MapAnt map (see above for both).

The competition area is dominated by the hill area of Harpatinvaara, which rises 110 meters from the surface of the river Pielisjoki. The terrain of Harpatti is both technically and physically challenging. The western side of Harpatti hill is partly bare rock, mostly with pine forest. The eastern side is more rocky and in many parts more dense. It is mostly spruce forest. Runnability varies from extremely good to extremely slow. Because of forestry one can also find cutting areas and young mixed forest. The competition center is located at the Eno school center (Koulukeskus) in the northwestern part of the old Harpatti map (shown above), which is made by Jussi Silvennoinen in 2007. He will also draw the new map for Joensuu-Jukola 2017.

  1. Something has to be wrong with the start time indications in your article. Local time in Joensuu and CET are two hours apart and therefor the starttime can’t be “22:00 CET (23:00 local time)”
    What is correct now?
