Today’s leg in Route to Christmas is something quite a bit different from what we usually see. Instead of long leg in untouched nature, we travel indoors to multilevel indoor-orienteering in Stockholm Indoor Championships 2017.
The reason for introducing this leg in Route to Christmas is to let people understand that this kind of orienteering may be both challenging and interesting – this particular race was won by Gustav Bergman (results). If you don’t like this kind of legs, I do promise that this will be the only indoor-orienteering in this year’s Route to Christmas.
As the concept of multi-level orienteering may be quite unfamiliar to some, the chosen leg is a quite easy one (there is a more tricky bonus leg further down if you want to challenge yourself, though).
First some details about how to move from one level to another. All stairs moving from one level to another are marked with a letter. Below you see stairs A and B on level 1 which lead to level 2 (the stairs at A are not exactly where the letter is drawn, but where the arrows are drawn).
The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):
And to set the leg in perspective:
Location
You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.
Webroute
Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers. When drawing the route, make a straight line from where you enter the stairs on one level to where you get out on another level.
Then you can take a look at a solution for the leg below: Up stairs T to level 2, then stairs X up to level 3 and stairs Y down to level 2 and get the control. One could take stairs U from level 1 to level 2 or stairs S from level 2 to level 3 as well, but both these options seem longer.
Update: It looks like the author’s indoor-orienteering skills are not the best – problems for both solutions. Here we have the correct solution from the comments:
I am sorry to say that the solution for the leg is wrong. On the second floor there is a door/wall that blocks the way. The door is under control number 2. And it is a black line. And The only way to level 3 is stair X and you need to take the stairs from level 1. So The best way to run Is to run on level 1 all the way to stair X then take it to level 3 and then stair Y to the control. If you want to run in stair T to level 2 you need to take stairway U back to level 1 and then X to level 3.

Bonus leg
And now a longer Bonus leg. The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):
Webroute – Bonus leg
Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.
Then one possible solution (I hope) below – tell me in the comments if this was a bad solution.
Update: And yes, indeed this was not a good solution. The course setter comments as follows:
On the leg: 24-25 you cant run straight through the “gray round thing” near the C stair on the second floor, either you have to go down the C stair and run around the “half moon shaped” building on the first floor and up again on the C stair. Or you can take another (and better) route choice (see my suggestion in the drawing section). And don’t miss the chance to run SIC 2018 (3-4 feb) if you want to experience this madness in real life! /Assar Hellström, course setter SIC 2017.

Route to Christmas series
The Route to Christmas series at World of O is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in RouteGadget, GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2017-competitions – or old forgotten ones which are still interesting – please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll include it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.
Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
I was just looking the same, that how can this option with the green line be right. There is an obvious wall on the second floor :)
Just a little bit of correction about the suggested soulutions on each leg. On the leg: start-control 1 you cant run from stair T to X on the second floor, there is a door blocking the way (near the 3rd control). Instead you have to run down the U stair to the first floor again and then take X all the way to the third floor. The best route choice though is to run directly to the X stair on the first floor (see my route choice in the drawing section).
And dont miss the chance to run SIC 2018 (3-4 feb) if you want to experience this madness in real life! /Assar Hellström, course setter SIC 2017.
And if you want a even harder challenge: try to find the best way from control 3-4, this is the hardest leg on the course ;)
Next time don’t put the letters for the stairs. This makes everything more challenging and this how we do it in Estonia for the last 10 more years :)
My solution for 3-4: U, X, S, G, C, L, O
Which is the fastest way after S?
I think your suggestion could be the fastest, but I think there is three possible choices that are pretty similar.
U, X, S, G, C, C, L, O (your suggestion, that I also should have picked)
or
U, X, S, G, D, L, O
or
U, X, S, J, K, C/A, L, O
This is amazing. Congrats to course setter for amazing course and setting some “artificial boundaries”.
I also “passed” through round grey thing. Maybe it could be marked different?!
In Croatia we have one race of this kind and it’s normally part of O-Gala in February. It’s in smaller building and winning time is normally around 15min. But even in this small building people get confused, so I can’t think what would happen here.

I suggest you trying to solve other courses from indoor orienteering events in Latvia which is called Latvian Indoor orienteering cup and is only indoor orienteering serial in world.
