Route to Christmas: Day 1 2018

BOOM! Off we go with a 3 km long leg from one of the finalists in “Course of the Year 2018″: The Finnish Championships Long – a race which has been praised by many readers the last weeks! Today’s leg in Route to Christmas is leg 9 in the M21 course from the Finnish Champs Long 2018 – enjoy!

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger). This is a long leg. It has paths. It has roads. It has tough uphills – and tough choices for you as a runner. What would you choose?

Location

You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. As usually, green is fast and red is slow. Here you get a good overview, but head over to the map below to get more detailed information.

In this next map the different alternatives are given a separate color. Here you can see that going partly right (but not too far right) is the fastest alternative (Kirmula), but that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fastest on the leg have been running even further to the right on the last part of the leg. More details on that further below, but the short story is that the blue route is definitely faster, but the red one is easier to execute. Even Kirmula did not run the best route – another 45 seconds would have been in for him with the correct microroutechoices. Going all the way around to the left is only a minute slower if you are as fast as Frederic Tranchand – probably the time difference is a bit more than this with excellent execution for all alternatives, though.

Finally two detailed “autoanalysis”-comparisons where you see how Kirmula does two microroutechoice-misses on the leg.

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2018-competitions – or old forgotten ones which are still interesting – please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll include it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
