WoO Christmas O-Quiz: Day 12 2012

routeto_12_s
Can you guess which country this map is from? The WorldofO Christmas O-Quiz gives you one map sample each day from December 1st until December 24th. You get one point for each day you guess the correct country for the map sample – can you make it all the way to 24?

Fill out your name, e-mail address and your guess for the country below! For a given day, only answers given between 05:00 CET and 23:59 CET on that day will be counted in the overall score. That means that even if you fill out the form on a later day, your answer will not be counted… You are only allowed to answer ONCE each day!

Correct answer yesterday: Russia!

Many mistook the map sample for Estonia – some also for Ukraine. But the correct answer is Russia. We still have the same 11 on top with 11 points:

  • 11 points: 11 persons
  • 10 points: 11 persons
  • 9 points: 9 persons
  • 8 points: 9 persons
  • 7 points: 12 persons
  • 6 points: 20 persons
  • 5 points: 17 persons
  • 4 points: 31 persons
  • 3 points: 42 persons
  • 2 points: 60 persons
  • 1 points: 147 persons
  • 0 points: 245 persons

And here are today’s comments (not many days until my Christmas holiday start now, then you’ll have to live without my comments unfortunately – but the rest of the O-Quiz and Route to Christmas will flow automatically without my interference):

  • This has to be old glacier bottom terrain, can it be Canada, maybe just north of Minnesota/Dakota? [Guess: Canada. Good that you try the logical approach Terje, but the answer turned out wrong..]
  • Russia! [Guess: Russia. Thanks Dmitry – I guess you have an advantage there .)]
  • Wild guess: somewhere around Moscow [Guess: Russia. Thanks Markus – can’t have been that wild a guess?]
  • at first i was thinking about estonia…. it was pretty hard today! ;) [Guess: Russia. Thanks Scalet, that’s right:)]
  • Some area with a real shortage of interesting terrains. Moscow region? [Guess: Russia. Thanks Kristaps – that’s right. Although I guess this terrain has some interesting elements – at least compared to a lot of the terrain I am used to]
  • It could be one of the Baltic countries, Russia or even Poland but I guess Belarus. [Guess: Belarus. Good try Eva – reasoning is good, but you ended up wrong. I guess it is difficult to be sure without searching.]
  • The overall impression suggests Russian/Baltic cartographer but they could bee hired to map elswhere too. The contours indicate some attempt to drainage, most likely by hand. The dominant lightgreen is distinctive tough. Feels very much like Russia or the Baltic but I could not find a terrain as flat as the sample shows. Could it be some low-land area in the Mediterranean? Guess: Russia [Guess: Russia. Thanks Tibor – good reasoning – good guess!]
  • Green and wet maybe its Estonia [Guess: Estonia. Thanks Saku – close, but not quite!]
  • Looks like a nice ski-orienteering karusell! [Guess: Russia. Thanks Gigi – that’s right.]
  • This one was hard! Was thinking of Estland or maybe Ukraine… [Guess: Russia. Thanks Alexander – you are still up there on top…]
  • Damn. It’s either Russia or Belarus. [Guess: Russia. Thanks Yves – you were right this time – in a good period now :)]
  • I wanted to write Estonia – this was my first love – but then I was thinking about alternatives – Ukraine, ,also Canada would be possible and then Russia – but I checked the maps archive , so it took me a little bit of time- a so big country with so many different types of orienteering – I never have been there but I have many friends from Russia – but orienteering family is big one. This flat areas can be all over the world – not Vatican – this I excluded – not andora, Nepal etc – jan, thanks for excitement each day, my daughter opening advent calendar – I am waiting for route to Christmas and map o quiz, Wolfgang [Guess: Russia. Thanks Wolfgang – you nailed it in the end :)]
  • You are getting harder and harder! nice! [Guess: Russia. Thanks Alessio – that’s right. This one was a bit hard, I agree. The rest I don’t even remember as I made them some days ago, so I let myself be surprised as well …]
  • Russia is full of strange terrains. [Guess: Russia. Thanks Marek – that’s right!]
  • Strongly points to Estonia. But there is this kind of terrain also in Russia. [Guess: Russia. Thanks jokuja – you nailed it!]
  • It must be some areas where the Zar was used to go hunting… [Guess: Russia. Thanks Brunic:)]
  • Looks like Russia, so I’m going to guess Ukraine! You’re trying to be sneaky, I think! [Guess: Ukraine. Thanks Colm – I’m never trying to be sneaky!]
  • I have no other choices except Belgium. I think it’s typical area for Belgium. [Guess: Belgium. Thanks Anastasiya – but this is more like eastern Europe..]
  • I was going for Estonia… but now you put pressure on me telling i was improving, so i had to check to prove you right, and finally found it. Kratovo-Geofizika in Russia ! Thanks Jan, i lost 30mn on that :)) [Guess: Russia. Great Tatam – it is good to see that I can drag you out from your lazy habits :)]
  • Wow. Have no clue where I pulled this one from. Just somehow my first idea was Russia /or maybe Ukraine/. From there it was easy ;) … [Guess: Russia. Thanks Ivan – you are still on top…]
  • I looked after the map for about an hour but couldn’t find it, but the most similiar I found where in Ukraine so I have to go with that… [Guess: Ukraine. Thanks Jonas, Ukraine is similar – and close – but not quite.]
  • This quiz is pointless when people are just looking up the maps. I haven’t looked at any maps and I haven’t gotten them all correct but at least I’m trying to test myself instead of basically cheating. [Guess: Estonia. Thanks for trying, Jonathan – this terrain type could probably have been in Estonia as well. The point with this game is more to fight against yourself than against all the others, so just find the form you want and play it your way. That’s why I don’t publish all my fancy results tables either – but I still look at them every day – green for each correct answer, red for wrong, gray for too late – long, long table with a lot of people trying their luck… Quite impressive how much green there is in there]
  • Area and mapping style looks like Belarus, Russia or perhaps Ukrain? Haven’t I seen this mosaic? Searched among my old maps and found the area. One map from 1983 and one from 1986. Southeast of Moscow. Russia! [Guess: Russia. Thanks Cha – looks like you get around a bit if you really where there twice…]
  • nice one :) [Guess: Russia. Thanks Veselina – got it now!]
  • was thinking about Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and then decided to look for maps in Russia: got it :) [Guess: Russia. Thanks Mariana – that’s it!]
  • today I’m just guessing. Could be anywhere.. [Guess: Estonia. Thanks Alan – not far away with your guess!]
  • Finally found it ! [Guess: Russia. Thanks Tunis, that’s it!]
  • I really have no idea;) [Guess: Poland. Nope, that’s right Riley]
  • Well, I have no idea what could it be. At the same time it looks familiar… Lets try this way – Russia? [Guess: Russia. Thanks Vladyslav – you can get far by really guessing as well (but you have some terrain knowledge from experience I guess)]

Not all of you hit the jackpot on Day 11 – here is the overview over tips:
