National Champs Fun: Maps and Results

champs

[Warning – long post with many maps] Swedish Champs long with great long distance orienteering. Finnish Champs middle with 5 different nations on Top 5 for men. Swiss Champs middle which finally were successful for “little brother” Hubmann – Martin took the victory ahead of Daniel. Norwegian Champs with a lot of nice orienteering in Kongsberg – from the same arena as next year’s World Cup.

Read on for some quick comments, maps and results from some of the national championships this weekend and the previous weekends. A LOT of great orienteering!

Finland: Pasi is back – Gueorgiou and Kauppi on top

Illustration: Map Pasi Ikonen – Finnish Champs middle

The Finnish champs middle distance in the men’s class look a lot like the World Champs – with 5 different nations among the Top 5. On the very top Thierry Gueorgiou (France) – revenge against reigning World Champion middle distance Leonid Novikov (Russia) who got silver. In third Pasi Ikonen (Finland) in his comeback. Anders Nordberg (Norway) improved his WOC result with a 4th place – and Edgars Bertuks (Latvia) finished 5th. Read Pasi’s story here – and see Gueorgiou’s Tweet about the race here.

I have to admit that these couple of months of being lazy made me feel quite insecure

In the women’s class there is 5 x Finland before the first Russian – with Minna Kauppi on top ahead of Anni-Maija Fincke. A clear victory for Kauppi, who almost didn’t qualify for the A-final (Kauppi always likes some drama to make it more spectator-friendly, just don’t overdo it, Kauppi…).

– The body was out of order from head to toe and if I had run just 50s slower I wouldn’t have gotten the Gold I managed to take in the final,  Kauppi writes at her webpage. – I have to admit that these couple of months of being lazy made me feel quite insecure. I knew I wouldn’t be in top form but it was hard to know if I could get beaten up really seriously by the others.

Read more about what Kauppi has been up to – and is up to – at her webpage.

  • Note! Finnish champs long distance were organized two weeks ago – again with Gueorgiou at the top in the men’s ahead of Time Sild (Estonia), Jani Lakanen (Finland) in third and Stepan Kodeda (Czech Republic) in fourth. Women’s won by Tuulia Viberg – Kauppi was not on the start line.

Sweden: Great long distance orienteering – Dahlgren and Alexandersson on top

Illustration: Map SM Long men (GPSSeuranta / 2DRrerun). More maps and map samples below the text/results.

Filip Dahlgren surprised by winning the Swedish Champs long distance ahead of Gustav Bergman and Oleksandr Kratov. – It is mentally tough, and you really have to fight all the way, Dahlgren said to orientering.se. – Overall seen it was a very good race, but it was not totally “clean” technically.

After big mistakes by Alexandersson, Lena Eliasson had a clear lead – but in the end Alexandersson was strongest

Tove Alexandersson – currently both World Cup leader and World Ranking leader – won a favourite victory in the women’s class – but not without drama. After big mistakes by Alexandersson, Lena Eliasson had a clear lead – but in the end Alexandersson was strongest and took gold 26 seconds ahead of Eliasson.

– I lost time on a long leg, and then I even missed the control. So a lot of time disappeared there. It was tough, but it was just to keep on fighting, Alexandersson said to orientering.se. – The terrain was nice, and it was really a great course. I was

Norway: Lundanes is back – Dæhlie, Fasting, Hausken Nordberg also gold winners

Illustration: Analysis of 1st leg from Norwegian champs long, 2nd leg, men’s class (see also article I have written with some analysis at o-norge.no, Norwegian – straight is best as on most legs in this terrain this weekend).

The Norwegian champs were held last weekend (Thursday – Sunday) just north of Kongsberg. The arena is exactly the same as will be used for the World Cup races next year – but according to the organizers the area is so unique that they can have a long and middle distance World Cup race in the same area next year while barely touching the area used for the Norwegian Champs this year. Wow!

The big news from the Norwegian Champs is that Olav Lundanes is back. Not in top physical shape, but technically and mentally on top.

The big news from the Norwegian Champs is that Olav Lundanes is back. Not in top physical shape, but technically and mentally on top. On the middle distance Lundanes took the gold medal after a close-to-perfect technical race after his competitors dropped out of the gold match one after the other on the last tricky part. The “last man standing” was Bjørn Ekeberg who looked like a winner until a few controls before the end – but then “lost it” – in the end he was 2 small seconds behind Lundanes. In the women’s middle distance Mari Fasting had the best speed as usually in Norway this year – but it was too tough keeping up the concentration all the way to the finish – and in the end Anne Margrethe Hausken took the gold medal ahead of Tone Wigemyr.

The long distance had some great long legs (including a 2+ km leg to the second control in all classes). It was maybe expected by some that there would be some tough route choice decisions to be made – however it turned out that mostly straight along the line was the fastest. Magne Dæhlie – 5th from WOC long distance – was strongest in the mens class – but it was interesting to note the surprise Thomas Natvig Årstad in third (read about his race in an article I wrote at O-norge.no – an nice story, even with Google Translate) – ahead of Olav Lundanes who “only” finished 4th on the long distance. Mari Fasting took a clear gold in the women’s class – Fasting has been the strongest in Norwegian races all year – especially when it gets long and tough.

At the Swiss champs middle distance this weekend Simone Niggli won her 38th (!) Swiss championship title (8th over Middle) – while Martin Hubmann for the first time won a Swiss championships title ahead of his brother Daniel. The terrain is described as fast runnable – but at the same time interesting technically (see maps below).

– I didn’t run so “clean”, but after catching Ines Brodmann starting 3 minutes ahead of me, I got confident that I had a good race, Niggli comments to Swiss Orienteering.

In the men’s class World Cup leader Matthias Kyburz did too many mistakes – and finished down on 6th place.

Two weeks ago the long distance champs were organized in very interesting Jura terrain (see map below). Daniel Hubmann won the men’s race ahead of Baptiste Rollier – while Simone Niggli won the women’s race ahead of Judith Wyder.

Denmark: Tue Lassen and Emma Klingenberg/Signe Søes – good to see Søes back!

Illustration: Map Danish champs long (from Tue Lassen).

Tue Lassen won both the middle and long distance in the men’s race. Emma Klingenberg was strongest in the women’s class in the long distance – while it is very good to see Signe Søes back winning the middle distance ahead of Ida Bobach and Emma Klingenberg. It won’t be easy to select the Danish team next year with yet another strong woman in the team …

It won’t be easy to select the Danish team next year with yet another strong woman in the team

Here is what Tue has to say about the middle distance:

– It is not often that you get the possibility to run in a new terrain and map in Denmark, but this year they got access to use Thorsø Bakker, south of Silkeborg. A great and quite hilly terrain, but also with some green areas, where you had to be careful. The map and course was good I think, maybe except the long leg, which didn’t have much routechoice. I did a good technical performance and even though we got back from the training camp 14 hours before the race, I was still fast enough to win.

And about the long distance:

– The Long distance was 14,9km. I did a very good race, and made only a few 5-10 seconds mistakes, and I also felt strong in my running. My performance was good enough for another goldmedal like last year, with Rasmus Djurhuus and Rune Olsen, 4 and 5 minutes behind.

There is a lot more interesting to read  at Tue Lassen’s webpage here. See also Danish-text report about Danish champs middle and long from the Danish orienteering federation.

Czech Championships

This weekend Czech Championships long distance were held. Dana Brozkova and Jan Sedivy won the race.

Comment from Jan Prochazka in his blog: – The course setters set nearly the best course in this kind of terrain, just bit too short. […] The terrain of Jeseniky Mountains is not technically demanding, it was more about route choices, but still it results in the men’s class were influenced by mistakes in control attacking. I am not talking about Jan Sedivy, who showed up good running shape and nearly avoids the mistakes in control circle and run for clear victory, congratulations.

Comment from Adam Chromy in his map archive: – Long distance in mountain, clean forest, which was nice to run in, but not so good for orienteering. As I expected, it was mainly about physical shape, so in this point of view, I consider my result as good.

See report in Czech here from the Czech O-Federation.

The course looks easy, but for me it took a while to get used to the terrain type, focus and get the optimal orienteering rhythm, so there was plenty of excitement. The forest was green and marshy and required quite an aggressive style, but it was not too slow either – 6:12/km. My race was pretty clean and steady all the way, I guess that was the key to success. It was a very tight battle between me and Edgars Bertuksall the way, in total I was 12 seconds faster
