NORT & WC decision in Finland: LIVE from 14:00 CET

[Updated after Stage 4Q] Stage 4 LIVE from 14:00 CET. Stage 5 Saturday from 12:40 CET. All races will be broadcast on national TV in Finland and Norway. Get ready for an exciting finish of both the World Cup and the Nordic Orienteering Tour during two busy days in the area of next year’s World Championships in Finland.

In the Nordic Orienteering Tour, Swiss star Matthias Kyburz has a 1:27 1:52 lead on the Norwegian long distance World Champion Olav Lundanes ahead of the two last stages final of the 4th Stage. Kyburz has to be counted as the favourite with one sprint race scheduled before the final chasing start – but the chasing start is a prolonged middle distance in very tough terrain – and anything can happen. This will be no walk in the park for the leaders…  Also don’t forget French Middle distance specialist Thierry Gueorgiou sitting in third – half a minute behind Lundanes. After Friday’s sprint the picture will be a lot clearer.

With 275 World Cup points for a runner who wins both the sprint Friday and is first back in the chasing start Saturday – nothing is decided in the overall World Cup in the men’s class where Olav Lundanes has a 44 point lead ahead of sprint champion Matthias Kyburz.

Simone again?

In the women’s class Simone Niggli’s lead to Helena Jansson was decreased by around a minute to 2:46 2:43 after the KnockOut sprint in Göteborg – but still the odds for Simone Niggli running alone & first into the finish after the chasing start on Saturday are quite low. Behind Niggli there should be an interesting fight for the second place, though. In the World Cup, Niggli has a 175 points lead on Minna Kauppi – and something very special should happen for Niggli to loose the overall World Cup victory.

How NORT and the World Cup is decided

This is how the Nordic Orienteering Tour and the World Cup is decided:

  • Friday morning the runners face a sprint qualification race where the finish time counts in the NORT overall standings – this qualification race does not give any World Cup points.
  • Friday afternoon (14:00 CET) there is another sprint race – with the 30 best from the mornings qualification starting. In the Nordic Orienteering Tour the finish time does not count – instead bonus seconds are given (120 for victory, then 90-70-60-55-50-40-38-36-34-32-30-18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 seconds). The race gives World Cup points: The first 25 runners get the following points: 75-60-45-38-34-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4
  • Saturday afternoon we are ready for the big final.  The first 40 runners past the finish line (i.e. the NORT overall positions) get “double” World Cup points ; the winner gets 200 points down to 2 points for the 40th place.
Stage #1: Sprint, Holmenkollen (Norway)
The Nordic Tour 2012 starts with a sprint in two parts. A qualification race in the morning and a final in the evening with the 30 best runners from the qualification. The race is at the famous ski center Holmenkollen in Oslo.
Overall standings: The time in qualification counts for overall standing. The time in final does not count for overall standing, but bonus seconds. 120 seconds for winner – down to 1 second.
Stage #2, Middle, Holmenkollen (Norway)
Also this race will be at Holmenkollen and it is a middle distance where the winning time is a bit over 30 minutes. The start order is the reverse result list from Nordic Tour #1 sprint race.
Overall standings: The running time counts for the overall standing. No bonus seconds.
Stage #3, KnockOut sprint, Göteborg (Sweden)
Once again time for Knock Out Sprint this time close to the river in Göteborg. In the morning there is a normal sprint qualification. The 24 best runners are divided into 3 semifinals with 8 runners in each. Semifinals and finals are in the evening. Tour-results are calculated on the qualification race with bonus time (120-1 seconds) to runners in semifinal and final.
Overall standings: The time in qualification counts for overall standing. The time in final does not count for overall standing, but bonus seconds. 120 seconds for winner – down to 1 second.
Stage #4, Sprint, Vuokatti (Finland)
Stage 4 is also a sprint with qualification in the morning and final in the night. 30 runners are qualified for final. The start list for the final is the reverse result list of the qualification. Bonus time are handed out in the same was as on stage 1.
Overall standings: The time in qualification counts for overall standing. The time in final does not count for overall standing, but bonus seconds. 120 seconds for winner – down to 1 second.
Stage #5, Middle, Vuokatti (Finland)
The last stage of Nordic Tour is also the final race of IOF Orienteering World Cup. The race is a middle distance with a winning time about 45 minutes. There is a chase start based on the total results of Nordic Tour including bonus time.
Overall standings: The first runner into the finish wins the Nordic Orienteering Tour 2012.
The Nordic Orienteering Tours (NORT) marks the last part of the 2012 World Cup – and with many points still to be fought for, nothing is decided in the overall World Cup.

    Which is very sad since I don’t speak finnish.
