Route to Christmas: Day 14 2017

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas is a sprint leg from the World Cup/Pre-WOC in Lavtvia this summer. The chosen leg is the 20th leg in the men’s course.

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger). PS! I did not get tips on any sprint legs this year; I’d want to include another one if somebody has a good one to suggest.

Location

You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. As you can see there is a clear advantage to go right – you lose around 10 seconds by going right.

The next illustration has colored all going left with red color and all going right with blue color. On the split time list to the left you see clearly how the best running left (Daniel Hubmann) is down in 17th place on the leg.

The next illustration shows you why you lose so much time going left. This illustration shows the pace with colors; 2:46 min/km and faster is dark green, 3:57 min/km is yellow and 5:27 min/km ans slower is dark red. Other paces are with corresponding colors in-between. As you can see, it is especially running up down the stairs on the left route which looses you a lot of time. You also have to slow down a bit in the downhill, but this is not very severe. Also, the two corners on the left route are significantly tougher (with respect to pace change) than the ones to the right.

Density map

See below for a density map of some of the ones who have drawn their routes so far.

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series at World of O is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in RouteGadget, GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2017-competitions – or old forgotten ones which are still interesting – please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll include it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!

  1. The way I read the curves, the left route goes downhill in the beginning and up later. So it is _up_ the stairs that the left route is losing time. Right?
