WOC 2018 Long Men: BIG GPS Analysis Leg by Leg

WOC2018ML_20_B

Here we study all the details of one of the most important orienteering races of the year: The World Orienteering Championships Long distance. Some of the questions we attempt to answer: Why did Lundanes win ahead of Glibov and Hertner, which legs where decisive, which routes where the best, and why.

Lundanes won with a quite big gap in the end – 2:37 minutes ahead of Ruslan Glibov (Ukraine) with Fabian Hertner (Switzerland) in 3rd at 3:04.  Lundanes run very strong in the first part of the race, and had a lead of more than 2 minutes halfway in the race at control 12. From there and until control 18 the Norwegian did have a poorer period were several runners got closer. From there and on there was no doubt that Lundanes would take the win, however, Hertner losing time towards the end.

Ruslan Glibov’s last half of the race was very impressive – here he was the fastest in the field, and this is what secured him the silver medal. The below graphical illustration shows the race development for the top 5 runners – and highlights how Glibov (green) passes Hertner, Daniel Hubmann (Switzerland) and Gustav Bergman (Sweden) in the last part of the race. The two most crucial legs to note are the legs from control 8 to 9 and the leg from control 19 to 20. The long leg from 8 to 9 is where Lundanes builds up a gap to most of his competitors, whereas the leg from 18 to 19 is where Lundanes and Glibov decided against the others by taking a better routechoice.

Looking at the biggest timelosses for the Top-10 finishers, it is not surprising based on the above that control 9 and control 20 are the ones with largest timelosses.

plot (5)

Looking at grouping, i.e. if runners run together and/or behind each other during the course, we can see that there are quite a few Top10-finishers who have been together with others during the race, and it could even have become decisive for the medal battle if Dæhli and Hertner would have had better success together.

Leg-by-leg analysis

Below a leg-by-leg analysis is given for the course from start to finish.

Men: S-1

The leg to the first control is in the flat, open forest and very easy. Still one of the main favourites Matthias Kyburz misses 40 seconds here due to bad direction – a very bad start for the Swiss who had really focused on the long distance ahead of this championships. Probably just nervousness, he has the skills to do this well on any training.

The second control is also in the easy, open part of the terrain, although we are starting to move a bit away from the flat. Still, this is a control were you should run straight on compass. Thus it is surprising to see how the field spreads out on this leg where compass is king. It could be that some are afraid of the marsh, but then not running straight makes you run even longer in the marsh?

It is surprising to see how the field spreads out on this leg where compass is king

Dæhli (finishing 7th in the end) and Kral (finishing 13th in the end) do mistakes of 40-60 seconds here.

Men: 2-3

Another easy leg where running straight on compass is the best solution – maybe aiming off a bit with the field to the left towards the end of the leg. Several, including Eskil Kinneberg,  do however run even more left to make it even more secure (which should be unnecessary). This easily costs 15-20 seconds without any real benefits in risk-reduction? Magne Dæhli and Ruslan Glibov also lose some time here.

Men: 3-4

To control 4 the course starts to change character – we are getting down into the valleys with poorer runnability and visibility. The control itself is quite easy, and there are no major routechoice-options here – this is just a taste of what is to come. Still, some runners struggle a bit, mostly due to not running straight on compass as they should.

Notably Matthias Kyburz and Magne Dæhli, who both already had a bad start, lose even more time here.

Notably Matthias Kyburz and Magne Dæhli, who both already had a bad start, lose even more time here – silver medalist Ruslan Glibov also loses some time. At this point in the course Kyburz is down in 18th place at 1:26 and Dæhli in 20th place at 1:30. That’s far down after only 10 minutes of running. Note also that Gustav Bergman is in the lead here, a few minutes ahead of Olav Lundanes. Fabian Hertner is also well places (at +0:14), while Daniel Hubmann is already 45 seconds behind and Ruslan Glibov 52 seconds behind.

We are still in the borderland between flat terrain and valleys. Olav Lundanes handles this very well, wins the leg and is now in the lead. Both Dæhli and Glibov continue to lose take, both missing the control and losing more than 50 seconds. Gustav Bergman who was in the lead at the previous control also does a miss at the control and loses 26 seconds and his lead.

Dæhli is now 2:19 behind and is nearly caught by Fabian Hertner who started 2 minutes behind

Dæhli is now 2:19 behind and is nearly caught by Fabian Hertner who started 2 minutes behind (Dæhli punches the control 18 seconds before Hertner, Hertner can probably see Dæhli from time to time ahead of him).

Into the valleys again, preparing for the long leg to control 9. Still a quite easy control, but Hertner (along with Dæhli) and some of the lower placed runners choose to use the valley to the left instead of running a more straight line. This costs some 40-50 seconds, but except for this, no big thing happening on this leg.

Hertner‘s good running turned a bit after he caught Dæhli – from being up there close to the leader he is now 1:29 behind – Dæhli nearly two minutes more. Glibov continues to lose a few seconds and is now 1:55 behind Olav Lundanes.

To control 9 the show really starts up – this is the longest leg on the course, and also the leg where we really see that Olav Lundanes is in great shape. Lundanes solves the leg very well from a technical standpoint, taking a fast and well runnable way down to the flat area close to the river, and from there chosing the natural routechoice along the flat and then climbing up to the control.

The key on this leg is to:

  1. Not run straight, that gives too much climb and risk. Still Glibov is in super o-technical shape and manages this quite well, losing only 47 seconds
  2. Not run to the right, that is too long compared to what you get out of it. Nykodym’s route to the right is 800 meters longer (see comparison between Lundanes and Nykodym below to the left), and he gets about the same amount of climb. Even if it looks completely flat, there are some small ups-and-downs. Nykodym can run faster here (4:35 min/km versus Lundanes’ 4:50 min/km), but that’s not enough of a difference for 800 meters longer running. Nykodym loses 3 minute here – to
  3. Not run left too early, the runnability along Lundans’ route is good if you exploit the white areas in the slopes (of which you can find many on Lundanes’ route) and keep away from the bottom of the valleys. Below (right) is a comparison between Lundanes and Kinneberg where you see that even though Kinneberg gets better runnability down the slope on the field, it is too much longer to run down there, and he also gets poorer runnability towards the middle of the leg before the routes go together. To beat Lundanes on this route Nykodym would have to run around 4.00 min/km, very high speed on this terrain!

With Glibov’s 47 second timeloss due to taking the straight route, he is now 2:42 behind Lundanes – that means that Glibov is actually 5 seconds more behind Lundanes than in the finish. From here to the finish Glibov is the fastest of all, beating Lundanes with 5 seconds.

Of the top placed runners, it is notablye that Fabian Hertner loses 41 seconds, Eskil Kinneberg 57 seconds, Leonid Novikov 1:15 and Matthias Kyburz 1:32. Matthias Kyburz is now 3:45 behind, and has been caught on the course by Gustav Bergman.

A shorter routechoice leg to control 11, but this is a rather obvious one where it is quite clear that you should go straight. Some of the runners who are places towards the end of the results take a long left/right, but of the top runners only Glibov loses significant time – another minute lost and now 3:37 behind Lundanes down in 9th place! Glibov was not among the main favourites ahead of the race, and even fewer would have tipped the Ukrainian for a silver medal at this time in the race.

The leg to control 12 is another quite short routechoice leg where you can lose the race but not win it. The two options to the left and right of the fence are quite similar in length and time. But some choose to tun all the way around on the road to the left, one km extra on a less than 1 km long leg. This is were Leonid Novikov loses a silver medal – he actually loses more on this leg (more than 3 minutes) than he is behind Glibov’s silver at the end of the race. Blanes also loses 3 minutes here on a similar route.

Looking at the elevation profile of the three different routechoice-options here (red to the right of the fence, green to the left of the fence, blue around the road as Novikov runs), it is quite obvious that running around is simply too far when you have to climb nearly as much as on the more direct routes (83 meter climb versus 90/102 meters climb for a kilometer extra of running).

Then a new routechoice leg, but this time in the flat area with other elements to consider. Lundanes loses another 30 seconds (8 seconds to Hertner), and the lead of Lundanes is suddenly only 1:04! Hubmann looked like Lundanes’ biggest rival a few controls earlier, but he lost 1:17 due to bad execution and not choosing the very best routechoice. Kinneberg also loses more than a minute here – together with his non-optimal routechoice to control 20, this is where Kinneberg loses a potential medal.

Another quite short leg, but here several of the top runners lose 20-40 seconds – inclucing Lundanes (21 seconds), Dæhli (32 seconds), Hertner (33 seconds), Kyburz (33 seconds) and Hubmann (40 seconds). Thus this did not have that much influence on the final result\,

Men: 19-20

The leg from 19 to 20 is the decisive leg in the competition, and also interesting from a routechoice point-of-view. Looking at the elevation profile of the main alternatives below, specifically the  straight route (A – red; 1093 meters, 86 meters climb) compared to the route of Hertner (B – green; 1360 meters, 74 meters climb), it is clear that the straight option has only 12 meters more climb than going around to the left. At first sight it looks like the red route has more climb, but this is not the case. Note also that Kyburz chooses to run a long route around to the right here, losing a lot of time.

Ahead of this leg the spectators have seen Hertner get slowly closer to Lundanes, cutting the gap down to around a minute – now instead the gap increases to 2:40 – suddenly looking very safe for Lundanes. If Hertner would have taken the correct routechoice here, he would have still been in the battle for gold. Instead, Lundanes is one of only 5 runners taking the fastest route, which is a straight variant. Ruslan Glibov also takes this variants, and wins the silver medal on this route. Daniel Hubmann and Gustav Bergman could also have won a medal here by taking Glibov’s route, but instead lost 1:18 and 1:32 on Glibov, respectively.

The below animation illustrates the differences in routechoice well:

  1. Thanks for analysis! I think that it was a really nice course, but why anyone note that the best route choices of the two long legs are almost on the same line? Not so interesting…
