EOC 2023: All You Need To Know

eoc_old_map_verona_part

The European Orienteering Championships (EOC) starts off individual Sprint in Verona Italy on Wednesday October 4th – with qualification from 09:00 CET and the final from 14:30. The championships continues with Sprint Relay on Friday and KO-Sprint on Sunday.

EOC 2023 is the second pure sprint EOC – after Switzerland in 2021 – and is organized in Veneto in Northern Italy. The championship is also the final World Cup round of the year, with the World Cup being decided in Sunday’s KO-Sprint.

While the opening race is organized in the city centre of the medium large city Verona, the Sprint Relay is organized in the small village Soave 23 km east of Verona – known for its Scaligeri Castle. The KO-sprint moves further east to the Vicenza area, with the morning’s qualification organized in Creazzo just outside Vicenza while the final rounds are organized in the city centre of Vicenza itself. The orienteering challanges will be typical for the flatter parts of Northern Italy – with narrow alleys in historic city centres combined with some more park-like areas.

Favourites

Women

The biggest favourites in the women’s individual sprint races are as always the two big stars of women orienteering this year – Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) and Simona Aebersold (Switzerland). Megan Carter-Davies (Great Britain) impressed everybody with gold and silver in the individual sprints at last year’s WOC, but seems to be at a somewhat lower level this year – it will be exciting to see if she can still give a real fight for the medals. Other medal favourites include the other Swiss and Swedish women, last year’s bronze medalist in the WOC KO-Sprint Eef van Dongen (Netherlands) with some of the Czech and Finnish women as outsiders.

See reigning champions and a detailed list of competitors at the bottom of this article.

Men

In the men’s individual Sprint races Kasper Fosser (Norway) and Matthias Kyburz (Switzerland) are probably the biggest favourites yet again, with Yannick Michiels (Belgium), Tim Robertson (New Zealand), Ralph Street (Great Britain) and Joey Hadorn (Switzerland) also up there among the top favourites. The men’s class is open, though, with many other athletes capable of winning a gold medal on a top day – including several other Swiss, Swedish and Czech athletes – with outsiders from Norway, Denmark, France and the home country Italy.

Sprint Relay

In the Sprint relay, Switzerland and Sweden will be the big favourites as always – but expect a good battle from other teams like Czech Republic, Norway, Finland and Great Britain – with France, Denmark and Austria as outsiders.

To hear more about the EOC favourites, you can also listen to the lastest episode of Ivarnational Orienteering Podcast – start from around 32 minutes into the episode to listen in on their take on the European Championships – including an interview with Ralph Street who took the victory in the last World Cup Sprint race in Czech Republic back in August.

Overall World Cup

With two races left – each giving 100 points for victory – Tove Alexandersson‘s 130 point lead in the women’s class ahead of Sara Hagström (Sweden) seems quite safe. Simona Aebersold in third is more than 200 points down on Alexandersson, with the overall victory already out of reach. In the men’s class it is more open about the overall victory, with Kasper Fosser having a 53 point lead over Matthias Kyburz, and with Gustav Bergman at 103 points behind Fosser. Only these three have a realistic chance of taking the overall victory – with the (quite open) battle probably being between Fosser and Kyburz.

See current standings in the overall World Cup at the bottom of this article.

Maps and terrain

Individual Sprint

The individual Sprint is organized in Verona, with the Sprint Qualification taking place northeast of the historical city centre and the Sprint Final in the heart of the city centre. The old map of the area is shown below – the arena will be in the lower left corner of the map, on the Piazza Bra just to the south west of the Roman amphitheater Arena di Verona which can easily be identified on the map due to its characteristic shape.

The terrain in the final will be mostly urban paved road with asphalt and cobblestone. The course runs through areas with wide roads and high-speed runnability, alternating others with narrow alleys. Some canopies do not present lighting and they can be pretty dark. Verona is one of the major tourist  destinations in Italy hence, there are some areas that have a high affluence of tourists, special passages and corridors will be in place to allow the transit of the athletes. The stone pavement can be very slippery in case of rain. An interesting side note for at-home spectators looking at the GPS-tracking: The symbol 501 (paved area) high traffic 50% is used in areas with heavy traffic or tourists, cars and parking lots.

sprint_old_map

Artificial barriers will be installed in the race areas – both in the Individual Sprint and for the other races. In this type of flat terrain, these barriers is probably what will make the orienteering challenging for the athletes – and make it more difficult to prepare for everything the course planners challenge them with. The barriers will be indicated with IOF tape, and they can also be equipped in various types of banners and advertisements. Guards will be present at each barrier to let tourists and other pedestrians through the barrier. There can also be gaps without tape for pedestrians, but these will be small and arranged in a way that they will not influence the overall visibility of the barrier for the arriving athlete.

In the qualification, the terrain is more dominated by residential areas. Here there will be mostly urban paved roads with some parks and open land areas. The race courses transits through residential areas which presents the possibility of parked cars in the internal gardens alternated to areas with single family houses with good runnability. The Sprint qualification race is organized with three heats for each gender. 45 women and 45 men will qualify for the finals in the afternoon, 15 from each heat.

Sprint Relay

The Sprint Relay is organized in the small village Soave 23 km east of Verona – see the old map of the area below. Although there are lots of contours on the old map, the courses will mostly be confined to the flatter parts of the old city, but with some climbs included, with a total climb of 45-50 meters in the courses. The terrain will be mostly urban paved road with asphalt and cobblestones with some transits on parks and open areas. The courses will present a good mix of high-speed runnability and more tricky areas sometimes with steep sections. The arena with start and finish will be towards the lower left corner of the old map, on the small paved area just to the northwest of the bridge over the river.

KO Sprint

Qualification

The KO Sprint is the last race of the championships, with the morning’s qualification organized as a regular, individual sprint race with three heats for each gender. 36 women and 36 men will qualify for the finals in the afternoon, 12 from each heat. The start interval is 1 minute.

The terrain is probably the least interesting in this championships: Flat urban area, mostly paved with some parts on parks and open land. The race terrain is a mix of areas rich with details and others with high speed runnability

Finals

The finals will represent an exciting finish for both the championships and the overall World Cup. Unfortunately the quarterfinals are not broadcast on TV – although these races have often proved to be some of the most intriguing of the KO Sprint races – but the semifinals and finals will be broadcast.

The terrain is mostly urban roads paved with asphalt and cobblestones, with some passages on grass surfaces. The town presents an interesting network of roads and alleys – see the old map of the area below. The areana is in the upper right part of the old map sample, in the northern part of the large paved area west of the river.

The courses may incorporate a Runners’ choice type of forking, where each competitor picks one of three options. There will be no announcement in advance about forking in the different rounds.

  1. What a poor championship sprint course today! Especially compared to the genius coarses set at last years World championships in Denmark.
Routechoices, if any, mostly an evident left or right choice with little significance in time differences.
Not to take away the glory from Kyburz and Hagström, they were worthy winners anyhow.
But part from the courses being too simple, weren’t they also about one minute too short?

    • I agree, I was not impressed, and it does not make interesting tv either. Italy has so many areas that would be more interesting, and even in this area you could have made courses that would have been a lot more enjoyable, technically challenging and given more interesting TV (due to changes in the lead). I am sure every team made at least 10 legs that were more interesting than the ones we saw today in their preparations…..

I saw the race live in Verona, and must agree. Still, e.g., Kasper Fosser missed one entry, Matthias Kyburz took the slower route choice to control 1 etc. Like Håvard Tveite (R.I.P) once said, if the sprint is easy you can and must run faster until it becomes tricky. Amongst the women, three of the four favourites had significant time losses; Tove Alexandersson, two medium large and two smaller, Simona Aebersold, one large 17-18 s, Megan Carter Davies, one even larger to the same control as Simona (control 13). So Sara Hagström definitely won also due to few and small timelosses, not only high speed. The orienteering part was still the deciding factor in the end.

        • @Knut: Yes, losing a few seconds on a mistake or a wrong route did decide the race, but due to the nature of the course, only the fastest were in the mix as possible winners at all. When very few can win medals even with a flawless technical race, that makes the race less interesting both for spectators and runners, in my opinion.

          > The orienteering part was still the deciding factor in the end.
I’d say running speed was more selective than the orienteering part here. There were other runners with flawless technical races who did not win – for them the running speed was the deciding factor in the end, so that depends on how you look at it, I guess …

Some more information regarding the sprint race on Wednesday, unfortunately unluck and map quality and readability had an important influence on the women race. The reason Tove A. missed the last control was that a large ambulance came and parked between the second last and the last control seconds before Tove arrived to this point. Therefore she could not see the last control visually, and thought she should run on the inside of the ambulance to get to the control and got trapped behind some fence and markers. It is very likely, but not absolutely certain that she lost the gold medal on this “ambulance incident”. Simona`s mistake was due to extremely-difficult-to-read forbidden area towards the 13th control, she tried to cut through a grey corner area, run into forbidden area and got trapped behind some garbage bins. Megan CD did the same mistake, but she had done a large mistake earlier on the leg, too. She took the wrong exit out from the plaza with control 12. Really a pity for the athletes, the organizers and for everybody who loves orienteering. One extra traffic guard and more forbidden area tape on each of these critical locations would have been good, but you cannot have people and tape everywhere either…..

        • It’s not that the individual sprint yesterday created some unworthy winners, the people on the podium would have been high ranked on any kind of course. They are that good generally and obviously in great shape right now.
And yes, mistakes, big or small, happens on any competition.
I’m mostly disappointed as a spectator that the ambition level on the course setting wasn’t higher. For non orienteerers I think this must have been an even more dull TV experience.
And in real numbers – is winning times around 12 1/2 minutes and result lists screaming for measures in tenths of seconds a good receipt for a championship race?

  2. I must agree with what is stated above. After the splendid courses in Denmark last year and also very nice challenges in the previous world cup in Czechia, this was a real disappointment.

Was it really not possible to make something more interesting and challenging for a European Championship?

  3. @Knut Wiig Mathisen
Wow, the plot thickens! Toves maneuver to the last control looked really strange when it happened.
And yes, looking back on the transmission – there is an extra ambulance put there when Tove arrives.
Well, Tove’s got lots of medals like these, so no big harm from that perspective. But for the championships it’s a clumsy mistake, clearly.
About Simonas and Megans mistakes to 13 – don’t understand why the setters didn’t put full red colour to mark that dead end side alley, instead of the hard to detect raster over the grey area they now chose…
