EOC Long Men 2014: Why did the winners win?

[Updated with Performance Index+more analysis] The EOC Long distance 2014 in Portugal did not offer too many route choice challenges – the race was more about avoiding loosing a few seconds here and a few seconds there than about taking the optimal route choices.

Daniel Hubmann has only four legs where he looses more than 20 seconds to the best split time

Below is a quick analysis of why the medal winners were the best at the end of the day – and where they managed to set themselves apart from the other athletes. The analysis is done leg by leg – and for each leg where the medalists or top favourites did mistakes of more then 15-20 seconds, a GPS-comparison is shown with the best athlete on this leg (based on the ones running with GPS). Split times used are real split times from the timing system; i.e. not GPS split-times. A split time table and a current standing is provided for each leg.

Looking at the split times of the medalists, these are very strong races from all of them. Daniel Hubmann has only four legs where he looses more than 20 seconds to the best split time – his one minute mistake at control 4 being the biggest mistake. Lundanes has also only 4 legs with 20 seconds or more time loss to the best – and his biggest time loss to the best split on a single control is 37 seconds.

Performance Index

Fredrik Johansson had a significant part of his race which was truly outstanding

Those who are used to reading Performance Index graphs, will agree that this is one of the best ways to understand who had a real potential of  winning a race. Looking at the Performance Index curves for this race (click above illustration for larger) can see that Fredrik Johansson had a significant part of his race which was truly outstanding (green dotted line) – however the Swede had a very variable race with too many quite poor legs with performance index well below 100%.

The next athletes to remark are Daniel Hubmann and Fabian Hertner. Their average level is actually very similar in this race (around 102-103%) – however Hubmann has one section of his performance curve above 105% – and also the tail placed closer to 100%. Thus Hubmann’s has some exceptional legs (which Hertner does not have), and his “bad” legs are not that bad (except for the one, bug mistake which goes outside the graph to the left).

It is also interesting to look at Olav Lundanes. Lundanes is the one of the top runners who made the most stable race – but his average performance index level is actually below 100%. He also has a flatter section above 102%, though – but still his average level in this kind of terrain at this day is significantly below the other three + Tranchand. Lundanes’ medal is saved by having a very stable race – it surely looks like Lundanes runs the best race of all the Top 5 compared to his potential on the day.

The last runner included in the chart above is Frederic Tranchand. Like Johansson, Tranchand runs an unstable race – but with very good performance when at his best (although slightly below Johansson – more on the level of Hubmann/Hertner). Tranchand definitely has potential for a medal – but needs more stability.

Note! A similar analysis for the women class will follow later this week.

Men A Final: S-1

1: D Hubmann

1: Johansson

1: Lundanes

The leg to the first control was actually one of the most decisive route choice legs on the whole course. The best option here was to go left like more than 70% of the runners with GPS. Tranchand has a very fast start of the race, and is fastest with 5:08. Note that both Hubmann and Lundanes take the best route choice but are slow starters this day; Lundanes looses 0:20 and Hubmann 0:29.

One of the runners taking the wrong route is Fredrik Johansson – the eventual bronze medalist. By running right you don’t get the good runnability on the big path – and you also loose time when crossing the fence.

4: D Hubmann

4: Lundanes

Leg 4 is the only mistake of Daniel Hubmann – here he looses more than a minute after a mistake in the control circle. This was actually one of the largest control point mistakes by the men fighting for a Top 6 position. Hubmann later said that this mistake is what woke him up – and made him ready for the challenges meeting him later in the course.

Note that Hubmann is now already 1:32 behind Matthias Kyburz who is in the lead after several good legs.

6: D Hubmann

6: Hertner

6: Lind

6: Lundanes

Leg 6 is another leg with a small route choice challenge for the runners. The difference between the optimal route (slight left, using the path system) and the more straight/right variant, is only some seconds. Both Lundanes and Hubmann go right – both loosing time to Johansson who runs a fantastic leg going left. Johansson actually wins this leg with 12 seconds to Tranchand. Tranchand has a good period – now leading the race ahead of Kyburz.

Leg 15 is another very strong leg from Johansson – 23 seconds faster than Hubmann who is the second fastest of the GPS-tracked runners on this leg. Looking at the GPS routes above, you can see that going straight is definitely the fastest here. Many runners use the path for part of the leg – loosing time on this.

Due to his great leg, Johansson nows go into the lead together with Tranchand.

16: Tranchand

Leg 16 is where Tranchand looses his initiative. The control in itself is quite easy – but at this speed any orienteering gets challenging when the runners start getting tired. Tranchand looses nearly 1:30 on this leg due to a mistake close to the control circle (looks like a concentration error). LInd also looses time here.
