More than 9 minutes per kilometer winning time for Swiss Matthias Kyburz tells something about the terrain the the long distance course of the World Military Championships in Orienteering in Korea. Tatiana Riabkina (Russia) won the women’s race just as for the middle distance.
Kyburz came directly from three hard races at the World Cup final in Arosa, Switzerland in the weekend – and after a third place on the CISM middle distance, the Swiss who finished second in the overall World Cup in 2015 could celebrate a gold medal at the long distance in a strong start field. Kyburz used 83 minutes for the 8.9 km course. Second behind Kyburz was French Frederic Tranchand – 1 minute behind – with Russian Andrey Khramov in third at +3:09.
Below you can see a picture of Matthias Kyburz’s arm after the race (from the Swiss Orienteering Team’s Facebook page) – a tough fight with Korean forest!

In the women’s class Tatiana Riabkina was fastest with 62:55 at the 5.2 km course ahead of Julia Novikova (also Russia) – just as for the middle distance. Laura Vika (Latvia) finished third in the women’s class.
Maps
The same map is used for Middle, Long and Saturday’s Relay, and the maps are therefore not available until after the relay. It will be very interesting to see the terrain and courses after Saturday’s relay.
