Thierry Gueorgiou (France) and Marika Teini (Finland) won the first day of Portugal O-Meeting 2016 ahead of the Swedes Gustav Bergman and Helena Jansson, respectively.
The first day of POM 2016 was a middle distance held in open terrain with many big boulders. Note that the most important day of POM 2016 is Monday’s World Ranking event, so some athletes may not have been running with full speed today.
Full focus
Thierry Gueorgiou always gives full focus on all of Portugal O-Meeting though – treating it as an important race.
– My goal is keep on going to do a good preparation, but I’ll do the POM’s four races in a focused way and we’ll see what happens. We have to wait six months to the WOC and the results here don’t mean too much, but I prefer to be here rather than last year, injured, in front of my PC, Gueorgiou told Joaquim Margarido of the Portuguese Orienteering Blog after the race.
In his training log Gueorgiou gave some more details about his technical performance.
– [I am] pleased with my technical performance, except for the 14th where I ended in a cliff which was probably too small to be on the map. Looking forward to test out another new terrain tomorrow,
Maps
Nothing too extraordinary for this first middle distance, but still enjoyable. The terrain was pretty open with the biggest rocky features and single trees well visible from distance. It was mainly about keeping a high speed and avoiding the greens who could stuck you for a while (Thierry Gueorgiou)
