WRE races Portugal & Spain: Maps and Results

P12 - M21SE_Day1

Thierry Gueorgiou and Tove Alexandersson won the World Ranking event middle distance in Portugal at Norte Alentejano O’ Meeting 2016 last Saturday. The same day a long distance World Ranking event was organized in Spain: Lorca O-Meeting with Andreu Blanes Reig and Svetlana Mironova as winners.

The Portugal race offered the strongest start field, but also Lorca O-Meeting had some of the top athletes in the world on the start line.

Norte Alentejano Men: Gueorgiou again

Normally it’s a good sign to stay two minutes behind Thierry at this time of the season, so I think my shape is okay for now. He is really fast and I’ve a lot of work to do, of course (Olav Lundanes)

Thierry Gueorgiou finished his race series in Portugal at Norte Alentejano O-meeting this weekend. After dominating Portugal O-Meeting last week, Gueorgiou took another win at the WRE race middle distance on Saturday in a very strong start field; Norwegians Olav Lundanes and Magne Dæhlie completed the podium around 2 and 3 minutes behind Gueorgiou. The start field also included top runners like Fabian Hertner, Frederic Tranchand, Lucan Basset, Baptiste Rollier, Lucas Basset and Filip Dahlgren.

– It was a great race, really difficult technically, very slippery in some parts, so it was hard to be physically engaged all the time. I did some small hesitations, trying to figure out how to escape the slippery parts. It wasn’t an easy task but I must be happy with my performance. We had here, again, an amazing terrain, Thierry Gueorgiou commented after the race.

Olav Lundanes in second place was happy with his race – even while being beaten by Gueorgiou.

– I think it was a good race. I did a few mistakes but small ones, I never was far away from the controls. Some times I wasn’t pretty sure about it, but it was a really fun race in amazing terrains. Normally it’s a good sign to stay two minutes behind Thierry at this time of the season, so I think my shape is okay for now. He is really fast and I’ve a lot of work to do, of course, but I’m very happy with my performance.

Note! On Sunday’s middle distance (not World Ranking), Gueorgiou was beaten by Swedish Emil Svensk with 16 seconds. Gueorgiou comments: – I don’t feel disappointed, I did a good race but I also know that, sometimes, it’s possible that someone beats me.

Norte Alentejano Women: Alexandersson out of the snow

Tove Alexandersson has had a great season in Ski-orienteering, winning four World Cup races so far this season and currently leading the Ski-orienteering World Cup. Alexandersson was now ready for a short break in the Ski-O season to do some Foot-orienteering, and climbed straight to the top of the results list with a win at the Norte Alenejano O-Meeting World Ranking race. Alexandersson was nearly 4 minutes ahead of Marika Teini (Finland) – very impressive by the Swedish overall World Cup winner from last year.

– I did a short break in the Ski Orienteering season because it was good in time and I like to do Orienteering in Portugal. NAOM was really fun, with two really demanding Middle Distances, both physical and technical. I haven’t been running that much during the Winter and it was very nice to came here, do some Orienteering and run again, Alexandersson commented.

The World Ranking race long distance at Lorca O-Meeting was organizes as a mass start event, with Andreu Blanes Reig winning a clear 5 minute victory ahead of Antonio Martinez Perez. Polish Wojciech Kowalski finished 3rd another minute down.

Great weekend at Lorca fighing with good runners. Victory (very tight) at Sprint and Middle distance race and 2nd place at WRE mass start Long behind a strong Andreu Blanes Reig who also won the overall. Time to keep on working hard… (Antonio Martinez Perez)

The women’s class was won by Svetlana Mironova – one of the best long distance orienteers in the world. Mironova showed her class and won with nearly 11 minutes margin down to Sara Eskilsson in second place.
