Course of the Year: Marika Teini chooses Portugal!

teinipart

–  Marika Teini’s favourite course of 2018 is a lot about smooth and offensive execution – in highly technical terrain in Portugal.

Read on for an interview with Teini who got her first international championships gold medal this year with her European Championships Gold medal at the middle distance in Switzerland – and continued to impress with a silver medal in the same discipline at the World Orienteering Championships in Latvia.  In this interview Teini tells us about her favourite courses and terrains in 2018.

This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2018″ contest organized by World of O. In the introduction article you can suggest YOUR favourite course for “Course of the Year 2018″ – there are prizes to be won worth more than 6000 Euro.

It is a lot about smooth but offensive execution

Interview Marika Teini

Q: What was the best forest course you ran in 2018 – and why?
There were plenty of good courses this year, and I actually liked almost all of the international races. Especially the middle distances at the European Championships, the World Championships and at the World Cup in Czech Republic were great – and so was the long distance at the World Cup in Norway. However, the course I enjoyed the most this year was a WRE race in Portugal in February,  III Meeting de Orientacao Dao Lafoes. The terrain was a nice combination of fast parts with good visibility and more detailed rock formations and green areas. Though there were no longer legs, you should have a good plan for each leg to avoid bushy areas and cliffs and to execute legs smoothly. I generally like courses with relatively many controls in detailed terrains, because then you have to be sharply focused all the time and it’s a lot about smooth but offensive execution.

Q: What was the best sprint course you ran in 2018 – and why?
The sprint at the World Championships was a really pleasant surprise for me. There were nice route choice challenges, and the course setter had used artificial fences wisely to make the terrain more “unknown” for us runners who had studied the old map of Riga thoroughly. You were able to keep high speed all the time, but at the same time you should be really focused to route choices and execution.
Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you ran in in 2018 – and why?
This year there were so many interesting and exotic terrains that I have to choose two. The most interesting forest terrain was one where I did a training in South Africa, even though there are actually no trees at all. Kaapschehoop Rockery consists of grassland and rocks of differend sizes, heights and shapes which form rock mazes. There it really is possible to hide controls into small holes where you have to navigate carefully to exactly the middle of the control circle in order to find the control.

I also want to mention one really special sprint terrain I got to visit this year. It was the third stage of the PWT China, and it was held in Beijing Garden Expo Park. The park consisted of different traditional Chinese gardens and temples and it was both a really beautiful place and a real navigational challenge. Almost every leg I got surprised how the terrain actually looked, as it was so hard to imagine what’s waiting for me just based on the map.

Q: What is the most interesting course you ran (or saw) in your own home country in 2018?
I ran only a few training in Finland during the whole summer because of the foot injury I got at the European Championships, but I pick the individual race at the Nordic Military Orienteering Championships held in Rovaniemi. There were different types of forest, from fast pine forest to detailed bare rock and open marshes, and I think the course had a good rhythm of short and longer legs.

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2018? Did you take the right choice?
The first one which comes to my mind is the long leg from control 4 to 5 at EOC sprint. First there were some short legs where you didn’t have time to read the course forward, and then you had to make a route choice for a long and complicated leg where there were many different options. I did a pretty straight route choice which I think was best if you could also execute it well.

Q: Did you set any courses in 2018? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?
I set courses mainly for my own trainings. Those are usually just basic courses or orienteering intervals and I usually draw them old-school way with pen. Unfortunately I don’t have any available at the moment because I’m not at home.
Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2018?
It’s the World Champs middle distance!
Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2018?
My biggest goal is to do well at WOC middle distance, but also to run a good season overall. I’m changing my training only a little bit towards next year, but of course I am trying to adjust it in order to be better in Norwegian terrains.

Q: Thanks a lot for your answers – and good luck with the new season!
