Interview: Ruslan Glebov about Course of the Year 2018

MapImage_3000

Three long distance courses in Sweden with many interesting routechoice legs in technical terrain are among Ruslan Glebov’s favourite courses of 2018. Glebov is clearly a man who loves tough challenges – read on to look back at some of the real highlights from 2018!

The Ukrainian had his big breakthrough on championships level in 2018 with a silver medal at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) in Latvia at the Long distance and a 4th place at the Sprint and a 5th place at the Middle at the European Championships (EOC) in Switzerland. Before this season Glebov’s best individual WOC or EOC result was a 12th place from Sprint in 2016.

This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2018″ contest organized by World of O. In the introduction article you can suggest YOUR favourite course for “Course of the Year 2018″ – there are prizes to be won worth more than 6000 Euro.

Interview Ruslan Glebov

Q: What was the best forest course you run in 2018 – and why?
I can’t select a single course, but I would like to highlight a few. The Swedish champs in Long distance (Editors comment: See top of page) is one of my favorites.
An exceptional beginning of the course, and also the rest of the course in general and the terrain itself was great
Also, the last stage of the Swedish League. Partly because of the terrain, and there were some nice legs (1-2 and 3-4). When I got the map in my hand, I thought it was Norway.

10Mila (but, I have to say, I was expecting a bit more from terrain, based on one of the training maps). But still, due to terrain.

O-Ringen, stage 4. Just killing it to control 1 (keep in mind the scale 1:15 000) and the same area to control 9. And the long leg 11-12.
MapImage3_3000
And of course, the Middle distance at the World Cup in Czech. Exclusive terrain!

Q: What was the best sprint course you run in 2018 – and why?
It’s also a bit difficult to say. Probably one of the best was in Novaggio, Switzerland.  Also, 2 days before I ran the District Champs of Stockholm (Editors comment: See course below the Novaggio-course). I didn’t perform well in Stockholm, and the city build-up is very different, so maybe that’s why I did enjoy Novaggio.

Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you run in in 2018 – and why?
To all those I wrote about before, I would like to add one of the training areas for this years Jukola. The terrain is quite rough, and contours are real 5 meters, so the depressions are quite steep.

Q: What is the most interesting course you ran (or saw) in your own home country in 2018?
This year in Ukraine I ran probably just three times. The Long distance at one of our national championships was a good one ─ in the EOC 2000 terrain.

I also saw few maps from interesting places.

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2018? Did you take the right choice?
One of the interesting legs I remember, was the long leg at WOC Long distance from control  8 to 9. I took an OK route (more or less straight), but my execution was not the best, so I was 47 second behind the best time (left route).
WOC2018ML_09_B
Also, the Long distance at the Swedish champs, leg 6-7 was an interesting one. It seems there are supposed to be plenty of routes, and it is more or less obvious that it is good to go to the road from left side. But the questions is how to get there! I probably took an OK route, but was almost 2 minutes behind the best split time (see the leg in Livelox here).

Q: Did you set any courses in 2018? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?
Yes, but I did set much less courses than last year.  This training had no big goals (due to terrain, you don’t have to be very good in course setting to set at least good course). The biggest goal was to have orienteering in challenging terrain, so, interesting orienteering all the time, not boring. Most of the controls set as middle distance course characteristic. Plan for long leg was to stay as close to red line as possible.

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2018? (Maybe 2019?)
Probably more or less all high level events, with high quality maps, interesting terrains, offset printing, challenging routes and courses.
Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2018? 2019?
I don’t have any goals. Not any changes in trainings expected either, but I’m quite open to try anything.
Q: Thanks a lot for your answers – and good luck with the new season!
