Nykodym chooses a course with 5 long routechoice legs

czechchamps

–  The course setter managed to build up the whole course based on five distinct legs which had many possible routes to choose from, Czech Republic’s latest World Cup winner Milos Nykodym explains about his favourite orienteering course this year.

Read on for an interview with Nykodym where he tells us about his favourite courses and terrains in 2018. Nykodym did his best international result in the career in the World Cup final on homeground in Czech Republic on tricky sandstone terrain.

This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2018″ contest organized by World of O. In the introduction article you can suggest YOUR favourite course for “Course of the Year 2018″ – there are prizes to be won worth more than 6000 Euro.

Interview with Milos Nykodym

Q: What was the best forest course you run in 2018 – and why?

It’s always hard to choose from such an incomparable terrain variations. But I would go for our Czech championships long distance, despite not so much beauty around. The course setter managed to build up the whole course based on five distinct legs which had many possible routes to choose from (see also GPS-tracking here).

Q: What was the best sprint course you run in 2018 – and why?

Feels a bit weird now, but also best sprint course I ran this year is from Czech Republic, and by the way again Czech champs. The course was made by Radek Novotný (head coach of the Czech national squad until this year). The city itself has a pretty long history. The agglomeration is more similar to the southern countries than ours. That made it special. And as usually Radek set a perfect course. Almost every leg offered three or four different routes rather than the normal left or right decision we see in most sprints. See GPS-tracking here.

Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you run in in 2018 – and why?

I might be expected to say WC final middle, but for me it wasn’t as special as for most of the other athletes.  The most interesting terrain I ran in 2018 was probably EOC middle distance qualification. Surprised so much to be running just in one slope all the time. Still having fun whole way from start til finish. I have to admit I love to run in rocks.

EOC middle qualification (3th)

I also loved this year’s 10mila terrain.

Q: What is the most interesting course you ran (or saw) in your own home country in 2018?

I have answered this already in the first question, but I can add one more race for sure. I would go for our World Cup Final selection race from Srbská Kamenice. The course, made by Radek Novotný (again), brought us into many sandstone challenges with great climbing and descending. The rocks were a bit smaller than during the World Cup Final race, it made the runability better and the race nicer in my opinion. See GPS-tracking here and results here.

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2018? Did you take the right choice?

Even harder question than those before! I think that the most interesting leg I had the privilege to run was at EOC long distance (24->25) or at least the most extreme. I was lucky/unlucky to run the same path already on the way to 13th control before, that time not the best route choice.

Q: Did you set any courses in 2018? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

This year I spent most of the winter, when I usually set training courses for myself, in Kenya. All courses I had set were, just as for Tim, preparation for bigger international competitions.

A few years ago I was more creative as you can see (2014/15):

Kombotechs:

Uphill intervals with downhill orienteering:

Course with extra/optional loops:

Microsprint forest:

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2019?

WOC relays & Czech champ long distance in the Jizerské hory mountains.

Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2018?

My first goal is to build up on my/our autumn success. A medal from WOC would be awesome, but I’m realistic. It’s going to be really hard in Scandinavia. But we managed to show with Jan & Vojtěch during the World Cup in Norway that on a good day we can fight with northerners at their homeground.

Q: Thanks a lot for your answers – and good luck with the new season!
