WOC 2023 Long: LIVE from 09:20 – TV from 12:00 CET

woc2023_prevmap2_long

WOC Long Race & Favourites Preview: The Swiss Alps are expected to deliver a spectacular Long distance when the first medals of the 2023 World Orienteering Championships (WOC) will be decided within 14:00 (women) and 16:10 (men) today. The women start from 09:02 until 12:35 with expected winning time of 82 minutes, and the men start from 10:49 to 14:40 with 90 minutes expected winning time.

Follow the race live: Orienteering.sports live page – here you can also buy a LIVE pass to follow the competitions live on WebTV

The terrain looks stunning, and so are the views from the terrain – especially if the thunderstorms of yesterday afternoon keep away and the sun comes out. The upper part of the terrain up to 2000 masl – where the start of the race will be – is  mountainous terrain dominated by steep slopes, deep stream systems and ditches – both above and below the tree line. Going further down towards the finish in the 14 / 11 km long courses with 680 / 510 meter climb and 35 / 23 controls for men / women, it changes to moderate hills with more rounded forms.

There are parts that have a lot of contour details, rocks and cliffs – partly like the middle distance qualification where we had a look at how the most tricky controls should be taken yesterday. This should be a long distance that contains it all – from tough uphills and downhills in alpine terrain to tricky orienteering in stony parts with some undergrowth.

Reigning champions WOC 2021: Fosser  & Alexandersson

reigning_long_2023

Reigning champions from WOC 2021 Long in Czech Republic are Kasper Fosser (Norway) and Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) – both being the biggest favourites also two years later. But as we saw at the European Championships Long in Estonia last year, none of the them are unbeatable – with Martin Regborn (Sweden) and Venla Harju (Finland) taking home the gold medals the last time the international orienteering elite fought for international medals.  As for the middle distance qualification, it is expected that the Swedish and Swiss runners will be among the main favourites for the long distance.

Men: A last, beautiful dance for Daniel Hubmann?

danielhubmann_WOC2009LongFinal 13

Daniel Hubmann (Switzerland) has been one of the best long distance orienteers in the World the last 15(!) years – with two WOC Long gold medals back-to-back in 2008 and 2009, a total of 6 WOC Long medals and with 10 Top-10 finishes at WOC Long. In 2008 he was accompanied by Anders Nordberg (now coach for Norway) and Francois Gonon (now coach for Switzerland) on the podium – in 2009 Thierry Gueorgiou (now coach for Finland) stood on the second step on the podium. At the last WOC Long in 2021 Hubmann was 4th – can he climb up onto the podium, or even up to the top of the podium today? Hubmann has shown good shape this year, and nobody can beat his experience in Swiss terrain.

But Hubmann will be challenged by many younger athletes – one of them being another veteran in the Swiss team, Matthias Kyburz. Kyburz has often been very strong in the first part of Long distance races, but has often got problem to keep up both speed and orienteering during all of the race during WOC Long distance races – and had to wait until 2021 to get a medal (silver) at WOC Long. Still, Kyburz definitely has the capacity to win the gold medal at WOC Long on home soil.

The reigning champion Kasper Fosser of Norway is probably the biggest favourite (at least he has a Swiss girlfriend, medal favourite Simona Aebersold, so the Swiss would be able to take part in some of the celebrations with a Norwegian win).  Below the WOC 2023 Long starters are sorted as a function of previous Long distance results (miniature photos: WOC 2023) – with Fosser, Kyburz and Hubmann topping the list. Going further down the list, we find Martin Regborn (Sweden; Gold EOC Long 2022), Ruslan Glibov (Ukraine; Silver WOC Long 2018), Eskil Kinneberg (Norway; Silver EOC Long 2022), Emil Svensk (Sweden; 2nd place behind Kasper Fosser at the only World Cup Long  organized this year, after a very tight battle),  Miika Kirmula (Finland) and Joey Hadorn (Switzerland). Of these Hadorn should be given special attention – he seems to be flying these days, knows the terrain type very well – his only challenge being to keep the concentration all the way from start to finish.

Women: Can someone “finally” beat Tove Alexandersson?

tovealexandersson_WOC2013LongFinal

Tove Alexandersson has won 5 straight titles on WOC Long distance – and took her first WOC Long medal back in 2013 behind this WOC’s head of course setting, Simone Niggli! Even if Alexandersson was beaten at EOC Long last year by Venla Harju (Finland; who is also among the outsiders today), the Swede is still the big, big favourite going into today’s WOC long distance. A more than 3 minute victory in the warm-up Middle Qualification yesterday did confirm that both the physical and orienteering technical shape is excellent, and that she can handle the Swiss terrain well. The longer courses for the women this year (up to 82 minutes expected winning time) should also suit Alexandersson.

The biggest rival of Alexandersson is Simona Aebersold (Switzerland). Aebersold showed in the World Cup Final Long distance in Davos Klosters at home ground last autumn that she can beat everybody – including Alexandersson – on her best days on the Long distance. Home terrain is surely a big advantage, but Aebersold did actually also beat Alexandersson on the Swede’s home ground at a World Cup race over the Long distance in Idre in 2021.

Another Swiss runner who has shown many times that she is strong on the Long distance is Natalia Gemperle – previously running for Russia. Gemperle has not been as strong this year as at her best, but she has had a special way to peak her shape for the championships – with silver at WOC Long in both 2021 and 2016, silver at EOC Long 2018 and bronze at WOC Long 2017.

Alexandersson’s biggest rival might however very well be coming from Sweden: Sara Hagström was very impressive at the World Cup long distance in Norway this spring (although finishing just behind Alexandersson in the end), and seems to be a lot stronger physically this year than earlier after a long stay in Italy to improve her uphill running. We also have to mention Andrine Benjaminsen (Norway) who finished 4th at the last WOC Long distance and has several World Cup podiums over the long distance. Benjaminsen has the speed and technical skills to win a medal at WOC Long, but needs to keep it together all the way from start to finish.

Below the WOC 2023 Long starters are sorted as a function of previous Long distance results (miniature photos: WOC 2023). The following on the list should also be counted among the outsiders for a medal: Elena Roos (Switzerland), Lisa Risby (Sweden), Marie Olaussen (Norway) and Marianne Andersen (Norway).
