WRE Spain & Portugal: Maps and Results

costabrava_part

Antonio Martínez Pérez (Spain)  and Jana Knapova (Czech Republic) took the WRE victories in Spain (see map above) and Kiril Nikolov (Bulgaria) and Nadiya Volynska (Ukraine) took the WRE victories in Portugal. Two WRE races were organized this past weekend; Saturday’s middle distance race of the XIV Trofeo Costa Blanca in the Alicante area at the east coast of Spain and Saturday’s middle distance race of the Idanha-a-Nova international meeting in Portugal.

Both the races in Portugal and Spain had an accompanying long distance race on Sunday. Especially the Costa Blanca long distance race in Spain showed many interesting route choice options in a terrain which was a bit different from what you often meet in Spain and Portugal.

Note! The Portugal WRE results are not yet available in IOF Eventor, and according to an e-mail sent to me it may not get WRE status as parts of the race was not in line with Guidelines for World Ranking Events.

Spanish win in Spain

In the men’s class in Spain, Spanish winner Martinez Perez got the toughest fight from Norwegian Gaute Hallan Steiwer (34 seconds behind) and Swedes Kent Ohlsson (+54) and Jonas Lenadersson (+1:03). Leandersson showed his strength on the tough long distance on Sunday in the same terrain – a race which he won with several minutes. In the women’s class another Czech, Vendula Horcickova, was closest to Knapova more than a minute behind. Lea Vercelotti (France) was third. Reigning, Svetlana Mironova, was far behind on the middle distance on Saturday – however whe won the long distance by more than 6 minutes.

Nikolov versus Kratov in Portugal

The fight for victory at the WRE race in Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal in the men’s class featured several top elite runners; Oleksandr Kratov (Ukraine), Philippe Adamski (France), David Andersson (Sweden), Hannu Airila (Finland), Valentin Novikov (Russia) and Scott Fraser (Great Britain) were some of the runners who fought with Bulgarian Nikolov for the victory. In the end Nikolov was 8 seconds faster than Kratov with Andersson in third another 2 seconds down. Kratov was on the lead at the 16th control, but lost 20 seconds to Nikolov to control 17, and could never catch up after that (see the final part of the course below).  In the women’s class Nadiya Volynska continued where she stopped last weekend, winning clear victories both in Saturday’s WRE and Sunday. Top names were there to give her fight for the victory though; Venla Niemi (2nd), Yulia Novikova (3rd), Silje Ekroll Jahren, Maria Magnussen, Lena Eliasson, Galina Vinogradova.

Below is an example leg from the middle WRE in Spain with routechoices (click for larger). This was probably the most interesting leg of the middle distance – but the long distance offered several legs with similar characteristics – some of them also more interesting.

POM coming up

The biggest of Spain/Portugal WRE events in the winter season is usually Portugal O-Meeting, which is organized the coming weekend with many top runners on the start list. This weekend’s races were just a warmup ahead of POM for many.
