WRE Spain & Turkey: Maps and Results

Daniel Hubmann, Svetlana Mironova, Yannick Michiels, Leonid Novikov, Thomas Natvig Årstad and Emily Kemp won the World Ranking events in Spain and Turkey the past weekend. Andalucia O-Meeting in Spain had the strongest start field – with reigning world champions Daniel Hubmann and Svetlana Mironova at the top of the results.

See links to maps from all events at the bottom of the article.

AOM Middle: Hubmann and Mironova

– Interesting course, I really enjoyed it, 4th place Lea Vercelotti (France) wrote in her map archive after the Andalucia O-Meeting WRE race over middle distance. The terrain was quite flat, but the varying vegetation made for some route choice challenges on the longer legs. World champions long distance Svetlana Mironova (Russia) won the women’s class 13 seconds ahead of Heini Saarimäki (Finland) and Marttiina Joensuu (Finland).

In the men’s class Daniel Hubmann (Switzerland) won a clear victory on his way to a one week training camp with the Swiss team in southern Spain. In second place we find one of the positive surprises of this winters racing in Portugal and Spain: Alasdair McLeod (Great Britain) who has put in some extra training this year ahead of the World Championships on homeground (see interview with McLeod at the Portuguese Orienteering Blog here). Edgars Bertuks finished 3rd after a quite big mistake on one of the controls.

AOM Sprint: Michiels and Kemp

aomsprint

The sprint race Saturday afternoon at Andalucia O-Meeting in a flat city was not a very tricky affair. According to 10th placed Milos Nykodym (Czech Republic), the sprint was “insanely simple” (via Google Translate) – and that is also the impression one gets when looking at the course. Above is one of the longer legs which does not really pose any challenges nor give any big penalty by chosing the wrong choice. Still the best sprint orienteers are on the top of the results – with Yannick Michiels (Belgium) winning ahead of Scott Fraser (Great Britain) and Alasdair McLeod in the men’s class. In the women’s class the middle distance winner Svetlana Mironova took another victory ahead of Ruth Holmes (Great Britain) and Marte Narum (Norway). In both the men’s and women’s class there was only 20 seconds between the winner and the third place.

Antalya Middle: Novikov and Kemp

antalyaday2_s

The WRE races in Turkey offered more tricky orientering than the Spanish races this weekend – a complex terrain with contour details, stones and varying vegetation. The men’s class was dominated by the 2013 World Champion on middle distance Leonid Novikov (Russia) – nearly 7 minutes ahead of Emil Andersson (Sweden) with Henri Kalve (Finland) in third. In the women’s class Emily Kemp (Canada) was strongest with Inga Dambe (Latvia) 6 minutes behind.

There was also a WRE long distance race staged in Antalya, but this race was unfortunately cancelled due to misplaced controls. From the map it looked like quite a race, though.

Antalya Sprint: Natvig Årstad and Kemp

antalyasprint

The Antalya sprint race offered some interesting sprint orienteering – especially the first part of the course which was rather hilly. Above you see one of the longest legs in the first part of the course – the leg from 3 to 4. Which variant is the shortest and which is the fastest here? Click the map to see the length of each alternative –  this illustration is made using the 2DRerun Courseplanning module.

Fastest in the Antalya WRE sprint race in the men’s class was Norway’s Thomas Natvig Årstad ahead of Sindre Østgulen Deisz (Norway) and Fryderyk Pryjma (Poland). In the women’s class the victory again went to Emily Kemp – this time with strong Norwegian sprinter Gøril Rønning Sund in second and Inga Dambe in third.

Maps

Unfortunately the map quality is not the best for all of the map – partly because athletes are not allowed to run with a GPS-watch in WRE races and therefore often do not upload their maps to their map archives. Here are the maps from the four map archives. If you have maps in better quality, please add a comment below.
