Former French national team member Francois Gonon won the European Vertical Championships in Chamonix last week with a new course record – finishing the course with 1000 meter climb in 34:07.
Francois Gonon (photo above is from WOC 2012) finished his international orienteering career after the WOC relay bronze medal with France in Italy last year – and was on the French WOC relay winning team in 2011. Gonon is still present in the international orienteering scene; last autumn the French orienteer started coaching the Swiss national team – and this autumn he was part of IFK Göteborg’s winning 10Mila team.
Gonon clearly still puts in some hours of training. Gonon won 41 seconds ahead of Norwegian mountain runners Stian Hovind-Angermund and Thorbjørn Ludvigsen.
Gonon also finished 2nd in the cross discipline. Another orienteer who has retired from international orienteering, Marc Lauenstein, won the Marathon discipline.
