Halden SK won the 25manna relay for the 6th time this weekend. 25manna is one of the largest relays in the world – each team consisting of 25 runners in all ages. With more than 350 teams, almost 9000 runners attended the competition – among them many of the best orienteers in the world.
The competition is unique, due to the mixed teams: Elite runners, youths and veterans all battle for the club in the same team. All runners in the club are equally important in this relay. On some of the legs several runners run in parallel so that it is just as important to have an even team setup as the best top runners on each leg.
According to the rules for the team setup, you need to have at least seven female runners in the team and at least one of the team members must be 16 year or younger. The length of the legs varies from 3 to 9 km and the shortest legs are so easy that youths can participate.
High pressure on the elite runners
Halden SK had the best team this year with elite athletes Mari Fasting, Olav Lundanes and Eva Jurenikova on the three last legs – building on the good result the other club members in all ages. Running in a team with so many athletes makes the pressure on the runners high – even the top elite runners feel the pressure.
– I was more nervous today then before my start at the World Championships, Halden’s Eva Jurenikova said after her race.
One minute margin
In the end the margin from Halden’s Mari Fasting down to Stora Tuna’s Tove Alexandersson in 2nd was only 1:24 – Alexandersson having picked several minutes on the last leg. Halden started together with IFK Göteborg on the last leg, but in the end IFK Göteborg finished 4th, also passed by IFK Lidingö.
– I was in the lead from the 3rd control, but then lost some time on a tricky control in the green, Fasting said after the race. – But then I managed to get my race under control again.
