Several mistakes of 5 minutes or more were made by the World Orienteering Elite at yesterdays Nordic Orienteering Championships over the Long distance in Salo, Finland. The GPS Tracking on all runners makes it possible to get a glimpse at how the best orienteers in the world tackle the Finnish terrain. Below you find some of them collected based on the GPS Tracking made available by the organizers.
Tricky first controls
In the mens class, the first two controls, the 9th control and the two northern-most controls in the butterfly loops were the controls which were most problematic for the runners. In the womens class, quite a few of the top women had problems with the first control of the southernmost butterfly loop. Below you find screenshots of selected mistakes from the NOC long distance.
- You find the course with routes by several runners – including a routegadget version at the NOC 2009 Long distance page at Omaps.worldofo.com.
- You find the GPS Tracking provided by the organizers here for men and here for women. Watching the tracking with all runners starting at the same time is very instructive.
Screenshots from GPS Tracking
All images below are screenshots from the GPS Tracking. The minutes given for each mistake are approximate values. Please go to the very interesting GPS Tracking to find more accurate times for the mistakes if you are unsure (see links above) – or to the color-coded split-times with extra information provided by the organizers.
Update: Just got a message that the 2-minute time-loss of Audun Weltzien was due to a strained ancle, where he had to sit down for a while before continuing.
