… you should simplify your distance by identifying the most noticeable objects …

The terrain around Ventspils is dominated by pine tree forests with small and middle dune forms. The terrain of the middle distance is also characterised by lot of marshes with small islets. The most characteristic feature of the terrain in EOC Tour 2008 is a lot of contour details, which will make the distances challenging ones. Since the runnability is mostly good, it will be difficult to read all the details, so you should simplify your distance by identifying the most noticeable objects – big hills, roads, paths, also marshes.

Typical routechoice challenges

There are 3 route choice alternatives in this leg:

  • Red: This is quite safe and easy choice for most of runners. You just have to move along the hill until you see a noticeable re –entrant. On the top of the hill you will probably see the check point downhill and just have to move down to get it.
  • Green: This is the longest route, but you can choose it if you like to run on paths and be sure where your are and do not like climbing very much. You should be careful with the path, which sometimes disappears, but you can use the big hill on the left side as a safe orienteer.
  • Blue: The shortest route. But you should be self-confident on your orienteering skills and in good shape, if you choose this route.
