Interesting Open Meetings & General Assembly during WOC in Strömstad

woc2016logo_250Next week the World Orienteering Championships is organized in Strömstad, Sweden. In connection with the World Championships, there will be held a number of meetings which on different levels are important for the future of the sport.

Below a summary of the meetings is given. Except for the IOF General Assembly, the other meetings listed are open for anyone to participate in.

IOF General Assembly

The General Assembly of the IOF will be held Friday August 26th from 09:00 to 17:00. The decisive body of the IOF is the members in General Assembly. Each IOF member has the right to send three delegates to a General Assembly. Each member represented at the General Assembly, except for provisional members, has one vote.

The IOF Congress Binder can be found here – among the items to be discussed is the competition review project and a suggestion from Sweden to harmonize winning times in men’s and women’s classes in international championships and World Cup.

Global Development Conference

The Global Development Conference will be held Wednesday August 24th from 08.30 to 11.15. This meeting has focus on increasing participation of different groups, especially youth. The purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for networking between people who are interested in contributing to the development of orienteering, both in new countries where orienteering is not yet developed, but also in established IOF Member Federations. The conference is open to everyone who wishes to take part. Among the items to be discussed is the World Orienteering Day, the IOF LiveCenter and how to make sure that orienteering becomes a truly global sport.  More information can be found here. Deadline for registration is August 19th 2016.

The 17th International Conference on Orienteering Mapping

The International Conference on Orienteering Mapping is organized on Friday August 26th  12.00 to 17.00 – and is the arena to be on for discussing orienteering map related issues – including presentations on WOC 2016 mapping, LIDAR experiences and news in OCAD 12.   Read the invitation here and see the program of the conference hereDeadline for registration was Sunday August 7th 2014 according to the invitation, but probably with possibility for late registrations.

Open Technology Meeting

The IOF IT Commission will organise an open technology meeting on Friday August 26th from 18.00 to 20.00. The meeting will be a gathering of technology savvy orienteers for presentations and discussions about relevant technology – timekeeping, GPS, analysis, hardware, software – the author of this article will hold a presentation about the use of GPS in orienteering productions from orienteering races.  The meeting is scheduled to last 2 hours, and each presentation is limited to 10-15 minutes (“lightening talk”) with 5 minutes for Q&A.  More information is available here.  Here is an overview of material from similar meetings earlier years.

Rules Harmonisation Seminar

The Rules Harmonisation Seminar is organized Wednesday August 24th from 20:00 to 21:30. The seminar focuses on the harmonisation of rules across the four disciplines, and how to improve the usability of rules and guidelines. Link to invitation.
