WOC Long 2015 Men: The BIG analysis!

routes_26_s

The WOC 2015 Long distance in the men’s class was a very tight race where the lead changed 8(!) times during the race. Although there were not many routechoice legs at first sight, the runners did choose a lot of different routes in the Scottish wilderness.

The short routechoice leg above is actually the leg that decided the race in the end. Silver medalist Daniel Hubmann went left – gold medalist Thierry Gueorgiou went right. 33 seconds difference – more than enough for Gueorgiou to get past Hubmann and run into victory.

Below we look at the decision points in the race: Why did the Thierry Gueorgiou win the WOC Long distance 2015 – and how did the race develop? This article is divided into three sections;

  • The first section shows a quick splits analysis of who is in the lead through the race
  • The second section takes you through all the decisive legs of the race
  • The third section is detailed leg-by-leg analysis. Here you get split times for each leg, and you also get the blank map for each leg, rotated correctly. This might be a good section to start in if you are interested in taking on the challenges yourself
  • The fourth section is a detailed analysis (only by illustrations) of where each of the top runners lose time

There will also be an analysis of the women’s race, but depending on Internet connection in the Scottish Highlands this may delay until Tuesday – I hope to get it out in the weekend, though.

Part 1: Splits analysis – 6 runners in the lead during the race

With only 2:35 from the winner and down to the 6th place after nearly 100 minutes of running for the winner, this was a tight long distance race. Thierry Gueorgiou (France) won 25 seconds ahead of Daniel Hubmann (Switzerland) with Olav Lundanes (Norway) in 3rd at 0:57. The fight for victory was close; Daniel Hubmann (lost 37 seconds at leg 2, finished 25 seconds behind in 2nd) and Fabian Hertner (lost 2:17 at leg 21, finished 1:58 behind in 5th) were only one control away from beating Thierry Gueorgiou. There were in total 6 runners in the lead during the race; all 3 Swiss runners Daniel Hubmann, Fabian Hertner and Matthias Kyburz, 2 French runners – Frederic Tranchand in addition to the winner Thierry Gueorgiou – and one Norwegian runner, bronze medalist Olav Lundanes. The below splitsbrowser shows the development during the race for the Top 6.

Part 2 – Race development

Control 2: Mistake for Hubmann

Olav Lundanes took the lead at the first control. Then Thierry Gueorgiou took over the lead already at the second control. Daniel Hubmann had a poor start to his race – at the second control he did a control mistake which cost him more than half a minute – this was Hubmann’s worst leg in all of the race.

hubmann_2_s

Control 4: Mistake for Gueorgiou

Gueorgiou continued to run with high speed, but a 50 second mistake at control 4 f0r Gueorgiou made the “King” fall down to 7th(!) place! This was a simple control mistake. This was also the first long leg with potential route choices, but up and down seems quite similar on this leg as good times are ran on both routes. Due to Gueorgiou’s mistake, Here Swiss Matthias Kyburz takes over the lead. Note also how Lundanes loses half a minute on this leg.

Control 9: Route choice mistake by Kyburz

Kyburz ran wll until control 8, but on the long route choice leg to control 9, Kyburz started to run the wrong route choice – and then changed his mind. Here it is clearly fastest to run on the path first – and then continue along the forbidden area. In addition to Kyburz’s mistake, Thierry Gueorgiou pushed very, very hard up the hill to the control. Thus Kyburz lost 47 seconds on this leg, and Thierry Gueorgiou took over the lead again. Gueorgiou beat everybody with at least 20 seconds on this leg – and it is the last hill he takes the time on his competitors – just as you see against Kyburz in the below comparison. FunFact about this leg: During the race a Tweet was sent out (see below) about this leg – asking who would be fooled by the course setter and not run left here. Former Norwegian top runner Tore Sandvik answered he would be – would you?

Control 13: Route choice mistake by Gueorgiou, Kyburz and Hertner

Thierry Gueorgiou kept the lead for 3 controls – but at the longest leg in the course to control 13 he was one of the runners who did not see that the route choice to the left was definitely faster. Daniel Hubmann saw the best route, executed the route well, and pushed hard. With this he took over the lead. Gueorgiou lost 1:16 at this leg. Matthias Kyburz and Fabian Hertner also took the wrong route choice – both losing more than a minute. Olav Lundanes lost half a minute on the same route as Hubmann, losing time on the middle part of the leg (in the uphill).

This could very well have decided the relay. The “armchair orienteers” in the media tent in the arena were very certain that left was fastest when getting the map in the morning of the long distance, thinking that this was a too easy leg without real route choices – left (Hubmann’s choice) was the only real option. The runners out there had a different opinion – spreading out on many, many different routes as you can see below.

Phi-loop: Hubmann loses a minute – Hertner takes over the lead

After the long leg there was a “phi loop” forking which is not that easy to analyze. Daniel Hubmann did however lose nearly a minute in total in the “phi loop” forking, and a new Swiss runner, Fabian Hertner arrived at the scene, taking a 16 second lead ahead of Olav Lundanes with Thierry Gueorgiou down in 4th. Within the phi-loop French Frederic Tranchand briefly had the lead when reordering so that everybody ran the same legs. Olav Lundanes ran the phi-loop best. Below is the result at the end of the phi-loop (control 20).

Men control 20 (Standing)

1. Fabian Hertner 63:05 +0:00
2. Olav Lundanes 63:21 +0:16*
3. Daniel Hubmann 63:31 +0:26*
4. Thierry Gueorgiou 63:33 +0:28*

6. Matthias Kyburz 64:03 +0:58*
7. Gustav Bergman 64:16 +1:11*
8. Olle Bostrom 64:57 +1:52*
9. Magne Daehli 65:51 +2:46*
10. Hans Gunnar Omdal 66:15 +3:10*

Control 21: Hertner runs a really bad leg

Now this looked set for Hertner finally taking it all the way – but Hertner was only in the lead at this point in the course. The Swiss seemingly didn’t handle the pressure – losing more than 2 minutes on the long leg to control 21 (more than he was behind in the finish). Although this was a long leg, it was not a real routechoice leg – good execution of the leg, especially the last part, was the important thing on this leg. Taking the rightmost route choice is probably the safest, though. Note also that we are into a completely different terrain now. From the marshed and soft ground in the first part of the course (just like in Olav Lundanes’ garden at home), to fast, hard ground normally suiting the Swiss runners better. Hubmann could exploit this, running the fastest split. Lundanes loses more than half a minute here – so does Kyburz. Lundanes loses time on most of the legs in this phase of the race – probably a combination of getting tired and the terrain type not being as suitable as in the start.

8. Fabian Hertner 77:43 +1:51
9. Magne Daehli 79:09 +3:17
10. Lucas Basset 79:21 +3:29

Thus Daniel Hubmann takes over the lead in the race, only 4 seconds ahead of Thierry Gueorgiou with Frederic Tranchand in bronze position 20 seconds behind and Lundanes in fourth at +23 seconds. At this point in the race Kyburz is 1:10 behind in 5th and Hertner down in 8th at +1:51.

Control 25: Tranchand and Kyburz execute poorly

The next decisive leg is the long leg to control 25. Again a leg with no major routechoices, but important micro routechoices in the first part of the leg. Here Frederic Tranchand does not handle the tricky orienteering well enough, losing more than a minute and effectively his medal chance. Matthias Kyburz loses even more time. Gueorgiou has one of his “worst” legs, losing 20 seconds at the first part of the leg to the best performed on this leg, Czech Jan Sedivy. Hubmann and Lundanes are faster than Gueorgiou, but the time difference between the medalists is less than 15 seconds.

8. Gustav Bergman 92:46 +2:52
9. Lucas Basset 93:53 +3:59

Arriving at control 25, the part of the race with real long distance character is finished, and there are some tricky controls down towards the arena which have more of a middle distance charateristics. At this point in the race Daniel Hubmann has a 12 second lead on Thierry Gueorgiou with Olav Lundanes in 3rd at +0:49.

Control 26: Crucial routechoice for Hubmann

Control 26 is however crucial for Daniel Hubmann. Here the Swiss loses 33 second to Thierry Gueorgiou. Although this is a short leg, this is actually a routechoice mistake by Hubmann. Going right on the ridge makes the control easy, and you don’t have risks with losing time in the valley (like Hubmann does). Hertner also loses half a minute on this leg. At this point in the course Thierry Gueorgiou takes over the lead – taking a 21 second lead which he never gives away again.

Full analysis – leg by leg

Below each leg is shown separately along with split times and routes of the Top 6 in the race + the Top 6 on the split. Note that towards the end of the race there is an error in the overall times; my analysis functionality hadn’t expected runners to use that much time, and some of the slow runners are listed ahead. This should not influence your understanding of the race, though.

  1. Seeing Mark Heikoop’s name reminds me: he’s a nice guy but IOF are fooling nobody by inviting a 51-year-old to participate in the World Championships. If IOF have abandoned qualification races, they need to find a better way of getting representation from nations like Holland. Perhaps there should be an age limit (40?). A short-term fix, which some people don’t like, but which would encourage particpation in those nations, would be for good orienteers from top countries (who can’t get into their own national team) to run under flags of convenience. There must be some Finns who live in Holland, for example.

Whatever method they use for the WOC itself, the IOF also need to force the top countries to give *much* more free training to young orienteers from the “smaller” countries.

    • Adrian,

if age rule of 40 was introduced, Håkan Eriksson should’t be able to win his silver medal at 2004 WOC. He was 43 in that year.

Is there really an issue if such competitors are present?

      • In qualification races, no. But it does look wrong, putting hobby orienteers straight into the final when there are thousands of better orienteers who are missing out. If we want more countries to take part we should invest in improving the sport in those countries.

  2. I don’t see the point. Even at the Olympics there are “athletes” who can’t hardly swim or cross country skiing. As long as it is ok for the Federation of Holland it should be ok for the rest. Thanks to Mark we even have one more country on the start list.

    • What’s the point of having more countries on the start list? If there’s no tradition and level of a certain sport in a certain country, they do not come to World Champs or Olympics. Where’s the problem with that? Each country has its favorite sports.

  3. Mark and probably many others have paid their WOC participations by their own pocket. The current rules allow arhletes to run WOC regardless of their age and that should stay. The point here is probably more about the minimal norm which is not enforced by IOF. World ranking was initial idea but was not introduced. Many would be swapt out. I think that IOF will introduce athlete’s licence at its sancioned events as it works in other sports and this will not be for free. So in the future it will be even more expensive for hobby orienteers to pay WOC by themselves. The logic why someone would be interested to pay for the licence instead of federation could be only the personal prestige. It is OK and if many good orienteers from scandinavia will pay for the lincence that would be clear how many want to race at those events.. If you look the # of registered athletes at WR and say the licence is 50€ than this 4000*50=200k.

  4. Awesome analysis! Fantastic :) Worth not having time to see it LIVE, to save it for this analysis w/coffee and chocolate

    Love the GIF’s <3 !

  5. Okay, I’ll stop being Scrooge. But if we do continue to invite non-elite orienteers to WOC, we shouldn’t time them out. Several runners were disqualified in the Middle and Long races for going over time. This is negating any positive effect of their participation.
